It\u2019s a sobering statistic, but thankfully, you don\u2019t necessarily have to be another number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the most stubborn pre-conceptions is that getting cancer is a matter of chance, or genetics and chance, and that nothing can be done to reduce the risk of ever being diagnosed with cancer,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/about-us\/who-we-are\/executive-leadership\/richard-wender-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Wender, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chief cancer control officer for the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn fact, each of us can take steps to reduce our risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent cancer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you begin these cancer prevention tactics now and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may be less likely to get it in the future\u2014up to 40% less likely, says Dr. Wender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Quit smoking.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing people can do if they want to reduce cancer risk is to quit smoking. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMsa1211128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that dropping the habit before age 40 can reduce your chance of dying from a smoking-related disease by 90%. Tobacco use and tobacco products are inextricably linked with a number of cancer types, like throat and lung cancer, so stub out that cigarette and avoid secondhand smoke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That may go for e-cigarettes, too, suggests <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfhcc.harvard.edu\/insider\/member-detail\/member\/jennifer-ligibel-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Ligibel, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chair of the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Clinical Oncology&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer prevention committee. Overall, not much long-term research has covered the topic, but e-cigarettes and vaping are already embroiled in health controversies\u2014so it\u2019s safest to just stay away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Drink less.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit your alcohol intake. It\u2019s \u201cperhaps one of the most important carcinogens to think about,\u201d Dr. Wender explains. \u201cAlcohol is third on the list of things that cause cancer that can be prevented.\u201d Drinking too much increases the risk for head, neck, liver, and breast cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Get vaccinated.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t skimp on treatments that can help protect you later in life. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hpv-vaccine-older-age\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gardasil-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardasil 9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201chave been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer, anal cancer, cancer of the penis, and possibly certain types of head and neck cancer,\u201d Dr. Ligibel says. You\u2019ll also want to get a hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine; the illness can lead to liver cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/should-you-get-the-hepatitis-a-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you get the hepatitis A vaccine?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Change your diet.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though specific diets have not been proven to decrease the risk of cancer, Dr. Wender notes it\u2019s important to follow a healthy diet all the same. Keep it rich in fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains, lean meat, and low-fat dairy. Limit processed meats, excessive sugar, smoked foods, and red meat. A report from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.fr\/featured-news\/media-centre-iarc-news-redmeat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Agency for Research on Cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that consuming a lot of processed meats can slightly increase cancer risk. The main health benefit of eating a plant-based diet, low in high-calorie foods is that it helps to moderate your weight and prevent obesity, which increases the risk of cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss, even modest amounts, can help prevent cancer before it shows up. Most importantly, though, \u201cdon\u2019t feel guilty or blame yourself about weighing more than you\u2019d like,\u201d Dr. Wender says. \u201cThis is tough work and a constant challenge and reflects our environment around food.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Exercise more.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can sound daunting, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/latest-news\/exercise-linked-with-lower-risk-of-13-types-of-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that exercise can lower your risk of 13 types of cancer. Start by adding just a bit of extra movement into your daily routine, then increase your physical activity from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere\u2019s the good news,\u201d Dr. Wender says. \u201cNo one type of exercise is any more effective than another. What matters is finding the type of exercise you like and engaging regularly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means trying to get some in every day, whether it\u2019s 30 minutes of intense exercise five days a week, or even just an hour-long brisk walk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining a healthy weight with diet and exercise not only puts you at a lower risk of cancer, but it also boosts your immune system to fight other illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Wear sunscreen.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin cancer is the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-skin-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common type<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cancer in the U.S., so avoid tanning beds and don\u2019t be shy about slathering on SPF. Dr. Ligibel says to start young as SPF is especially effective at preventing cancer when you begin wearing it early in life. Wearing SPF 15 daily reduces your risk of squamous cell carcinoma by approximately 40%, and your risk of melanoma by 50%, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-prevention\/sun-protection\/sunscreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skin Cancer Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Get regular checkups and screenings.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early detection is key to both avoiding and successfully treating cancer, so be sure to go for your annual physical and also stop in if something seems out of the ordinary. You should proactively get cancer screenings, too. Some can actually help stop the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer screening, for example, detects precancerous polyps so they can be removed. Cervical and breast cancer screenings can also detect precancerous changes that can then be treated before they become cancer. Check with your healthcare provider about which tests you need, and how often. It can vary based on your family and medical history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Be aware of your environment.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your home and work environments may put you more at risk for cancer than you might expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery home should be checked for radon,\u201d Dr. Wender says. \u201cRadon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind tobacco exposure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Testing is easy and doesn&#8217;t cost much; find out how to test your home from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/radon\/find-radon-test-kit-or-measurement-and-mitigation-professional\">the Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, your work and your hobbies can be risk factors, too. Do they involve regular exposure to chemicals? If so, find out if they\u2019re carcinogens and how to limit your exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Know your family history.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer can be hereditary, so it\u2019s important to know if your family\u2019s medical history puts you at a high risk for cancer. You\u2019ll learn what types you may be at risk for, and when to start getting screening tests. If you have a family history, you may want to start certain tests sooner. Even with no genetic risk, Dr. Wender says, everyone should start getting cancer screenings around age 45. Your primary care physician can explain which tests are recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer prevention organizations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned about your cancer risk, follow these organizations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcrf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Cancer Research Fund<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Clinical Oncology<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will keep you up-to-date on new research and guidelines for helping you stay cancer-free.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About\u00a01.8 million people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer every year.
