Well-child visits are opportunities to track your child\u2019s physical, emotional, and social development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a well-child check?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA well-child check is a time for a clinician to check in with the child and their family regarding their health and well-being,\u201d says Natalie Ikeman, MPAS, PA-C, a physician assistant with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hennepinhealthcare.org\/provider\/natalie-ikeman-mpas-pa-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hennepin Healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Minneapolis, Minnesota. \u201cPhysical health is checked with an exam but also social, developmental, and emotional health are checked through forms and a discussion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your physician will discuss safety, nutrition, and family dynamics at the appointment. A good WCC can give your pediatrician an overall picture of a child\u2019s well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why are well-child checks important?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the name implies, well-child visits are a time for dialogue between patients, families, and their healthcare providers. They give the healthcare provider a chance to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-keep-your-kids-healthy-all-year-long\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make sure children are healthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and developing as expected. They provide the opportunity for parents to ask a doctor any questions or raise concerns they have regarding their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-child checks help catch problems when they start and prevent them from becoming more serious. \u201cThis is the key time to discuss preventive measures to prevent many of the chronic diseases of adulthood now prevalent in the pediatric population (obesity, hyperlipidemia, anxiety, depression, nutrition deficiencies, dental disease),\u201d says Martha E. Rivera, MD, a pediatrician with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventisthealth.org\/white-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adventist Health White Memorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to keep up with these routine checkups to avoid missing the warning signs of something that could become a problem. \u201cIt is always better to be proactive rather than reactive,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golddirectcare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeffrey S. Gold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the founder of Gold Direct Care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>At what ages are well-child checks performed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, well-child checks are done at the following ages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the first week after birth\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least yearly from age 3 to 21<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What should you expect at the well-child check?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some things happen at each visit regardless of age. Children are measured and weighed. \u201cThe pediatrician is able to follow a child&#8217;s growth on a standardized chart, which is helpful in assessing overall health as many health problems for kids will show up as problems with growth,\u201d says Sara Silvestri, MD, FAAP, a Pennsylvania pediatrician and the founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theadoptiondoc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adoption Doc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere will also be an assessment for developmental milestones, which is important as some delays can be corrected and children do best if therapy is started early.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visits at all ages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/people\/childrenyouth\/ctc\/families.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head-to-toe exam with immunizations and lab tests (as needed)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checks on development and growth\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing and vision assessments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational information about good physical and mental health<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions about safety and prevention<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to ask a doctor\u00a0 and get answers about your child&#8217;s health, behavior, and development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to talk about the child&#8217;s learning, feelings, relationships, parenting, and caregiver well-being<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some things are more age-specific. Dr. Silvestri breaks some of them down:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For infants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, discussions about feeding, sleeping, developmental milestones\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 9-12 months and 18-24 months, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead and hemoglobin testing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 18-24 months, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autism screening<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 3 and up, yearly, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hearing and vision tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 9-11 and 17-19,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lipid screening<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 11-12 and up, yearly,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression screening<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents may be asked to leave the room during adolescent appointments so that teen patients can speak with their healthcare providers privately. This is to give teens an opportunity to ask questions or bring up concerns they may not wish to discuss in front of their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important function of regular well-child checks from an early age is to foster a relationship between healthcare providers and young patients. This helps to establish a level of comfort that allows adolescents to address their potentially uncomfortable concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are some questions to ask at well-child visits?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no silly questions, and no concern is too small. Your healthcare provider is prepared to answer anything you have to ask them. There are routine vaccinations your child needs to be fully protected through adulthood. Some issues might not be obvious to you, but your healthcare provider will recognize them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are guidelines, all children develop in their own way. If you see something that concerns you, don\u2019t panic. Instead, ask your healthcare provider about it.
