For adult women, fluctuating hormone levels (specifically increased levels of androgens, such as testosterone) are often to blame for these breakouts, which are also known as hormonal acne. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flo.health\/menstrual-cycle\/health\/symptoms-and-diseases\/hormonal-acne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women typically experience acne-causing hormonal shifts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during puberty, menstruation, menopause, and due to conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of birth control that treat acne<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently four birth control pills that are FDA-approved for acne treatment. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ortho Tri-Cyclen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrostep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/yaz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaz<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/beyaz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyaz<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaz or its generics, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jasmiel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jasmiel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/loryna\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loryna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (estradiol\/drospirenone), is particularly effective among acne patients, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skintap.com\/pages\/meet-dr-colombo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgana Colombo,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/skintap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skintap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a virtual dermatology practice. That&#8217;s because the anti-androgenic properties of its progesterone element are beneficial in controlling acne\u2013adult female hormonal acne in particular, Dr. Colombo says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other birth control pills can be helpful to treat acne too, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advanceddermatologypc.com\/doctors\/cybele-fishman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybele Fishman, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dermatologist with Advanced Dermatology PC in New York, New York.. \u201cThere are four generations of progestins in combination birth control pills. The third- and fourth-generation pills are better for acne,\u201d she says. Good options are combination pills that include the third-generation progestins desogestrel and norgestimate, or the fourth-generation drospirenone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering if it\u2019s okay to be on a hormonal IUD and still take a birth control pill to treat acne, it\u2019s not a good idea, Dr. Fishman says. That\u2019s because by combining the two contraceptives, you could be getting too much progesterone, leading to unpleasant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthywomen.org\/your-health\/progesterone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What\u2019s more, it could actually exacerbate your acne. If you are on a hormonal IUD, a better choice may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/spironolactone-for-acne\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spironolactone for acne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Fishman advises. Your healthcare provider can help you choose the best birth control for acne.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Benefits of birth control for acne<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Colombo, estrogen\/progesterone birth control pills work best for adult females between the ages of 18-35 years old who have adult hormonal acne. It\u2019s characterized by cystic outbreaks on the lower face, chin, jaw, neck and chest areas, and it tends to flare a couple days before the woman\u2019s menstrual period, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control can also be beneficial in pre-menopausal women whose acne flares at certain times during the menstrual cycle, Dr. Fishman adds. \u201cDuring ovulation, there is a testosterone spike. The week before your period, there is a progesterone spike. These tend to be the times that acne flares if it is correlated with one&#8217;s menstrual cycle,\u201d she explains. Hormonal birth control pills can help to regulate such hormonal fluctuations to keep acne at bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Risks of birth control for acne<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a handful of common side effects associated with birth control pills. Headaches, nausea, menstrual irregularities (such as spotting in between periods), weight gain, and breast tenderness are the most common. Although rare, a more serious side effect is the risk of deep vein thrombosis\u2014in which a blood clot forms in your vein, often in the thigh or lower leg. But the estrogen in birth control will not cause acne, Dr. Colombo says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Fishman, the following groups should not take birth control for acne treatment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cigarette smokers, because they are at increased risk of blood clots\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women with a personal or family history of blood clots or a medical condition that increases the risk of blood clots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who experience migraines with aura because combination birth control pills can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rush.edu\/news\/why-birth-control-and-migraines-aura-dont-mix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase their risk for stroke<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women with a personal or family history of breast or uterus cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Which type of birth control is best for hormonal acne?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBirth control pills containing estrogen\/ progesterone stabilize hormonal fluctuations and indirectly decrease testosterone,\u201d Dr. Colombo says. \u201cThat leads to decreased stimulation of the oil glands and less inflammation, making the skin less oily.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line? Fewer acne flare-ups. To treat your hormonal acne, a dermatologist may recommend the use of oral contraceptives. But it\u2019s important to note that only combination birth pills are effective. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several hormonal contraceptives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the market:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two types of oral contraceptive pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: combination pills (which contain both hormones estrogen and progestin) and minipills (which contain only progestin)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implants (aka <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexplanon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUDs (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirena-52-mg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirena<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/kyleena\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyleena<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liletta-52-mg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liletta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/skyla\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; plus copper versions that don\u2019t contain hormones)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ring (aka <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nuvaring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NuvaRing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patch (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xulane\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xulane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zafemy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zafemy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/depo-provera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shot<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hormonal IUD, minipill, or Depo-Provera shot are not helpful to treat acne, says Dr. Colombo; in fact, they may actually trigger or worsen the condition. The birth control implant is neutral, Dr. Colombo adds. They don\u2019t contain enough estrogen to be beneficial, but at the same time don\u2019t contain unopposed progesterone to aggravate acne, she explains. And because the copper IUD doesn\u2019t have any hormones, it won\u2019t have any effect on acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How does birth control help with acne?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination birth control pills help with acne by preventing androgen levels from spiking, which, in turn, keep sebaceous glands from producing too much oil and clogging pores. The estrogen component here is key\u2014progestin on its own won\u2019t work, which is why minipills aren\u2019t approved for the treatment of acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the best birth control pill for acne?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best birth control pill for acne is a combination pill\u2014one that contains both estrogen and progestin. The Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) has approved four brand birth control pills for the treatment of acne: Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Estrostep Fe, Beyaz, and Yaz. Generic formulations of these branded birth control pills would also be effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of progestin the pill contains can also affect a birth control pill\u2019s efficacy, per a study in the <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/jddonline.com\/articles\/dermatology\/S1545961616P0670X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Drugs in Dermatology<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to their findings, drospirenone (the progestin found in Yaz) was the most helpful in preventing acne, while levonorgestrel and norethindrone (the progestins found in Levora and Lo Minastrin Fe, respectively) were the least helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, one combination birth control pill that contains norethindrone acetate, Lo Loestrin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lo-loestrin-fe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lo Loestrin coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), can actually cause breakouts (acne is listed as one of its side effects), so it should probably not be taken if you are looking to clear up skin problems. Bottom line: Not all birth control pills treat acne or treat it with the same level of effectiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to birth control for acne and weight loss, Dr. Colombo says Yaz works best. The progesterone element in the pill, drospirenone, has anti-androgen and mildly diuretic properties, she explains. \u201cIt basically blocks testosterone, which helps acne and decreases water retention which leads to water weight loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How long does it take the pill to clear acne?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you begin taking birth control pills, it could take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several weeks to months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see a difference in your skin. Many studies show some improvement at three months with the greatest improvement evident at six months. This is because the pill needs some time to recalibrate the hormone levels in the body that contribute to acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other treatments for acne<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If birth control medications do not clear up your acne, your doctor may prescribe another kind of medicine to clear up your skin. Effective treatment options may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical treatment options such as benzoyl peroxide and retinoids, particularly used in conjunction, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/158570-the-combined-use-of-topical-benzoyl-peroxide-and-tretinoin-in-the-treatment-of-acne-vulgaris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be effective in fighting pimples.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3366450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salicylic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a \u03b2-hydroxy acid can be helpful as an exfoliating agent to unclog pores.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high blood pressure medicine spironolactone, though not FDA-approved to treat acne, has been shown to be effective, especially among women.
