White vinegar, for example, is made from alcohol, while balsamic vinegar is made from grapes. The British favorite, malt vinegar, is produced from barley kernels. Thanks to its high acidity, if stored in a cool, dark place and closed tightly, apple cider vinegar also has an indefinite shelf life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar\">What are the benefits of apple cider vinegar?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple cider vinegar, and its active ingredient\u2014acetic acid, may have beneficial effects on your body, including killing bacteria, stabilizing blood glucose, and promoting weight loss. Acetic acid has historically been used as a disinfectant. Some recommend mixing it with water only while others say it can be diluted in olive oil as a salad dressing. There\u2019s also debate around how much apple cider vinegar for weight loss is necessary. Some say one to two tablespoons per day is okay; others claim that an apple cider vinegar detox requires two to three doses a day. Many people ask whether they should take ACV in the morning or at night. Some sources suggest taking it at night is best for blood sugar levels while others claim that taking it right before bed can trigger <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heartburn-how-to-treat-nausea-and-stomachaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn, GERD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and acid reflux.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-apple-cider-vinegar-help-you-lose-weight\">Does apple cider vinegar help you lose weight?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For such an inexpensive, widely available product, there seem to be quite a few health benefits of apple cider vinegar, most of which are attributed to the acetic acid found in ACV\u2014acetic acid is also in other vinegars, pickles, and foods containing vinegar, like sauerkraut. If you\u2019re looking to lose body weight, there\u2019s been some promising research, but it\u2019s far from conclusive. It may have other health benefits too. For example, following an ACV may also help to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/apple-cider-vinegar-diet-does-it-really-work-2018042513703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent blood sugar spikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes by blocking starch absorption, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34187442\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and help with acid reflux (although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/apple-cider-vinegar-for-heartburn-2018032813530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no research exists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to back this claim up). The following studies had positive results when testing the benefits of ACV:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16630552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight-week study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performed on mice with diabetes found that those who were fed a diet containing acetic acid had lower blood sugar levels than mice who ate a standard diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19630216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that rats with diabetes who ate food containing apple cider vinegar saw an improvement in health markers for Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans have benefited from acetic acid and ACV, too. A Japanese double-blind, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19661687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12-week trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered that, at the end of the study, subjects who ingested a drink containing vinegar had significantly lower weight (2.6-3.7 lbs.) , body mass index, waist size, and visceral fat than the subjects in the placebo group who didn\u2019t have any vinegar. For weight loss, try taking a small amount, about 1-2 tablespoons before meals, but keep in mind that results are variable and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/weight-loss\/expert-answers\/apple-cider-vinegar-for-weight-loss\/faq-20058394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not guaranteed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013more rigorous research is needed to determine whether drinking in ACV is indeed effective for weight loss..<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taken with meals and complex carbohydrates, ACV also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20068289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced after-eating blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels in adults with diabetes. Not so fast. While ACV may have health benefits for those without diabetes (both humans and rats), there isn\u2019t yet conclusive evidence that shows what those benefits are. And even though apple cider vinegar may help diabetes patients control their symptoms, it should be considered an addition to a diabetes or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reversing-prediabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prediabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> management plan, not a cure. If you\u2019re thinking about adding ACV to enhance your overall health, the best option is raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enzymedica.com\/blogs\/ingredient-science\/what-is-the-mother-in-apple-cider-vinegar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in liquid form, which contains healthy bacteria and enzymes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23979220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interesting study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of the UK actually questioned whether apple cider vinegar\u2019s purported effects on appetite and satiety aren\u2019t due to vinegar\u2019s health benefits at all, but rather its unpleasant taste. The results indicated that while vinegar intake does enhance satiety, the \u201ceffects are largely due to poor tolerability following ingestion invoking feelings of nausea.\u201d Read: It\u2019s not that people feel fuller after drinking vinegar, it\u2019s that they don\u2019t want to eat anything because they\u2019re nauseated afterward. Not too promising.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor most people, having more apple cider vinegar isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing, but it\u2019s highly unlikely that it will lead to weight loss benefits,\u201d says Rachel Trippett, MD, a family physician with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\/healthcarefacilities\/zuniramah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Public Health Service Indian Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Mexico. \u201cYou\u2019re better off focusing on eating more whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and quality meats, and going to the gym than drinking apple cider vinegar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-drawbacks-to-apple-cider-vinegar-safe-for-weight-loss\">Are there drawbacks to apple cider vinegar safe for weight loss?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, if you\u2019re on team ACV and want to try it, there are some downsides that you may want to consider&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ACV can weaken tooth enamel. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acetic acid it contains can erode your tooth enamel. Weaker teeth can lead to dental problems down the line, including tooth decay. If you are going to have apple cider vinegar as the main ingredient and not, say, in a salad dressing, it\u2019s best to dilute it with some water or try apple cider vinegar pills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ACV can mess with potassium levels. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some people, regular consumption of ACV has lowered potassium levels. If you\u2019re already on a medication that can lower potassium, like some blood pressure medications, you\u2019ll want to be cautious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ACV can alter insulin levels. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ACV may be beneficial to people with diabetes, it may also alter insulin levels. You should be particularly careful with vinegars and speak to your healthcare provider before increasing your apple cider vinegar intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternative-to-apple-cider-vinegar-for-weight-loss\">Alternative to apple cider vinegar for weight loss<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A better source for weight loss tips is a licensed healthcare provider, nutritionist, or dietitian.
