Between 2006 and 2011, constipation accounted for more than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">700,000<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trips to the emergency room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-and-causes-of-constipation\">Symptoms and causes of constipation<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of constipation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer than three bowel movements per week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small, hard, dry stools that are difficult or painful to pass<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need to strain excessively to have a bowel movement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people experience pain in their abdomen when they are constipated, especially after meals.
