As long as your alcohol consumption isn\u2019t excessive, it is generally considered safe to have a drink when you are under the influence of Viagra and medications like it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is there a Viagra and alcohol interaction?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere does not seem to be a major drug interaction between alcohol and any of the drugs that are used for erectile dysfunction,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drsgreenrx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharzad Green, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmacy coach and trainer with Advanced Pharmacy Consulting in Tempe, Arizona. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-pills-drugs-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular ED drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/viagra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sildenafil citrate), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cialis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tadalafil), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levitra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levitra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vardenafil). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/revatio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revatio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also contains sildenafil and is prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), but is sometimes prescribed off-label for ED as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, having a drink or two might even work in your favor: A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30232467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 meta-analysis (an analysis of many studies)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by the Department of Urology at the West China School of Medicine in Chengdu, China, found that light to moderate alcohol use was actually associated with a decreased risk of erectile dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes, a little alcohol helps with sexual response because it can decrease inhibitions, anxiety, and stress,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwsexualmedicine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanley Myers, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist and sexual medicine specialist in Portland, Oregon. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-does-viagra-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Viagra works within 30 to 60 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sexual desire and stimulation are still needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1-1024x480.png\" alt=\"Mixup Chart Viagra embed\" width=\"604\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Mixup_Chart_020720-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can alcohol affect erectile dysfunction?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key phrase here is \u201ca little.\u201d The amount of alcohol matters. The story changes when it comes to men who drink heavily and\/or engage in binge drinking (as indicated by the study, and just basic medical advice). Men should not consume more than two alcoholic drinks per day, regardless of whether they take medication (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication) or intend to engage in sexual activity, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/moderate-drinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the threshold for binge drinking? The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines it as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/moderate-binge-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consuming five or more drinks on any one occasion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while that doesn\u2019t change the fact that there aren\u2019t any official drug-drug interactions between alcohol and ED drugs, drinking alcohol excessively can dull sexual response. In other words, it makes the use of Viagra and its counterparts somewhat futile. People who misuse alcohol, specifically, fare very poorly. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2917074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research published in 2007<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 72% of male alcoholics experience some type of sexual dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Heavy drinking] will definitely cause a negative impact on a man\u2019s ability to achieve and maintain an erection,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nychealthandhospitals.org\/doctors\/childrey-nefertiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nefertiti Childrey, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist based in New York. Excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence can contribute to a number of other medical issues, like metabolic syndrome and liver disease, Dr. Childrey adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Does it matter what beverage you choose?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the very practical advice to avoid excessive drinking, it is also important to choose the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cocktail when mixing Viagra and alcohol. Some are safer than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you prefer red wine, you are in luck! Data shows there\u2019s no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15470336\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinically significant reaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the two. It was studied specifically in relation to Viagra and hypotension (presumably because of worries that the combination could trigger dangerously low blood pressure levels, a speculation Dr. Myers says is likely overstated). Not only that, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/103\/2\/534\/4564750\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that flavonoid-rich consumables, including red wine, have the potential to reduce the incidence of ED.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Greyhound (vodka + grapefruit juice) is your drink of choice, that mixer might interfere with your Viagra (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/grapefruit-juice-and-some-drugs-dont-mix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as grapefruit juice does with many medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the FDA). Harvard University reports that while clinical trials and information are incomplete, the Viagra\/grapefruit juice combo could trigger side effects such as headaches, flushing, or low blood pressure. If your beverage is citrus-juice free, you\u2019re probably in the clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s often recommended to take Viagra on an empty stomach, which could be problematic if you\u2019re drinking alcohol. Ask your doctor if you can take your dose after eating. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17233779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that there was no significant difference when Viagra was taken before a meal or with food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Side effects of Viagra<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re mixing Viagra with alcohol or not, it\u2019s important to know which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.viagra.com\/learning\/what-are-possible-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can expect and those that require medical attention. The most common side effects of ED medication are lightheadedness or headache, stomach upset or indigestion, and back or muscle pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek medical attention if you experience an erection that lasts longer than four hours. Abnormal vision and hearing loss are also serious side effects that require urgent medical help. Although rare, Viagra can cause a heart attack or stroke in patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease. Go to the emergency room if you experience symptoms like chest pain or irregular heart rate. A popular chest pain treatment is nitroglycerin (a nitrate); however, the combination of Viagra (or any ED medication described above) and nitroglycerin is very dangerous, increasing the risk of dangerously low blood pressure, fainting, or heart attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, despite these promising facts, be sure to speak with your own doctor or pharmacist about whether it is safe for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to drink alcohol with your ED meds. If you don\u2019t have any other contraindications, you\u2019ll likely get the green light to enjoy a few drinks in moderation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think if there were an absolute contraindication for a man to have alcohol with these medications, [the medications] probably wouldn\u2019t be as successful as they are,\u201d says Dr. Childrey. \u201cSo because of that, I don\u2019t advise patients not to drink.
