Everything from upper airway irritations and postnasal drip to acid reflux and other common health conditions can leave you coughing at night instead of snoozing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, there are many easy ways to fight back against nighttime coughing. With an arsenal of over-the-counter medications, environmental changes, and simple at-home cough remedies, you can turn your restless nights into restful (and cough-free!) ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why am I coughing at night?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step to stopping a nighttime cough is figuring out why you have it, says Apurvi Thekdi, MD, an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Houston Methodist. Since treatments vary for different types of coughs, you need to know the root cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Thekdi says it\u2019s also important to pay attention to the kind of cough you have (wet or dry, sporadic or spastic), any related symptoms (like voice changes or trouble swallowing), and any possible triggers, such as changes to your diet or environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re ready to play detective, here are some of the common causes of coughing at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common cold<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve got a cold. You\u2019re sneezing and have a runny nose, but thankfully you\u2019re not coughing&#8230;until you lie down to sleep. Why do coughs get worse at night when you\u2019re sick? Because lying flat on your back or side to sleep allows the excess mucus from your illness to pool in the back of the throat and in the chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Thekdi says certain types of asthma can lead to a chronic cough, which may become worse at night. There is also a kind of asthma called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/asthma\/asthma-symptoms\/asthma-cough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cough-variant asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptom is a cough (i.e., there\u2019s no wheezing, difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath). Over-the-counter cough medicine does not work for this type of asthma. An inhaler is often required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postnasal drip<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s because of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/8-ways-treat-seasonal-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sinusitis, nasal polyps, or some other viral illness, postnasal drip is one of the biggest culprits of a nighttime cough. All that phlegm has to go somewhere, right? News flash: It\u2019s going down the back of your throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your environment\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common allergens and irritants\u2014such as dust mites, cigarette smoke, mold spores, pet dander, cockroaches, and pollen\u2014can be enough to trigger a persistent cough every time you snuggle up for sleep. This is one of the primary reasons why you might only experience coughing at night (and not during the day).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI-related illness\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does your gastrointestinal system have to do with coughing? A lot, if you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux. When you lie down after eating, the same stomach contents that usually cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heartburn-how-to-treat-nausea-and-stomachaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn and nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the day can reach as far as the back of your throat, setting off a cough reflex (and, sometimes, a sore throat).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re sick and clogged with mucus, you might take an expectorant to loosen things up. But if you take one too close to bedtime, you could spend half your night coughing up all that thinned-out phlegm. Meanwhile, other medications like beta blockers and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/drugs-supplements\/info-02-2013\/chronic-cough-ace-inhibitors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, list coughing as a potential side effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some serious conditions\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re coughing at night, one of the above reasons is likely to be the cause. That said, there are some serious conditions that could be the source of your cough.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Influenza.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition to fever, body aches, and fatigue, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cause severe respiratory symptoms similar to the common cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Pertussis, aka whooping cough.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This highly contagious bacterial illness is sometimes called the \u201c100-day cough\u201d because of how unrelenting it is.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lung cancer or tumors.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A new cough that doesn\u2019t go away is one of the most common symptoms of lung disease like cancers and tumors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bronchitis.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bronchitis-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Acute bronchitis is usually the result of a viral infection; chronic bronchitis may occur in heavy smokers or people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COPD).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pneumonia-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Pneumonia<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When an infection occurs in the air sacs of your lungs, they might fill with fluid that causes a severe cough, chest pain, and trouble breathing. Mostly, pneumonia produces sputum with a cough.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nerve problems.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cOne less obvious reason for nighttime cough is what we call a \u201cneurogenic cough,\u201d says Dr. Thekdi, \u201cwhich is one caused by an irritation of the nerves that supply sensation to the larynx.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Heart disease.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coughing can be a sign of heart failure, a condition where the pumping function of the heart weakens.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stop coughing at night\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have an idea of where your cough is coming from, it\u2019s time to test out some strategies for soothing it, especially if it\u2019s keeping you awake at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sleep in an elevated position<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with your head and neck inclined, so mucus doesn\u2019t pool as easily in your throat or chest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If dry air is the cause, run a humidifier at night<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or take a steam bath before bed to moisten your airways. Cold air can also lead to more frequent coughing in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/about-us\/media\/top-stories\/cold-weather-your-lungs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with certain conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so keep your bedroom thermostat set around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/bedroom-environment\/touch\/what-temperature-should-your-bedroom-be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65 degrees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Adjust your diet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Caffeinated products are dehydrating and may make coughing worse. Caffeine may also worsen a cough related to GERD, as does eating too close to bedtime or eating foods commonly known to contribute to acid reflux (like chocolate or spicy foods).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take OTC medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-cough-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two options for cough medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here: dextromethorphan (a suppressant) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/guaifenesin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaifenesin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an expectorant).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expectorants are better for breaking up wet, productive coughs, but don\u2019t take them near bedtime. If a wet cough is plaguing you, take a suppressant that includes a decongestant, which can provide relief without exacerbating your cough. Try peppermint leaves, marshmallow root, or crushed thyme leaves infused in hot water for maximum cough relief.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Swallow a spoonful of honey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cheap and effective natural cough suppressant that can even be used in young children (except <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/botulism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">babies under<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two years of age).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription options<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your nighttime cough isn\u2019t relieved by any of these treatments, it might be time to call your doctor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, after more than three weeks [of a cough], it\u2019s time to investigate it,\u201d says Dr. Thekdi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cough is caused by GERD, getting your reflux under control could be the key to stopping it.
