It\u2019s one in a long list of potential adverse effects, most of which, you assume won\u2019t happen to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When that familiar throbbing in your forehead starts, you might remember that warning and wonder, \u201cIs taking Zoloft and ibuprofen safe?\u201d While it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-vitamin-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not always obvious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when two medications might have serious a drug interaction, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people this particular danger is really quite small.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you avoid taking Zoloft and ibuprofen together?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short answer is that there is a very small likelihood of increased risk of bleeding when taken in combination, but it is likely safe for use for short periods of time,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlysnydermd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Carly Snyder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a psychiatrist based in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard that long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, can cause stomach problems like bleeding or ulcers. The effect that\u2019s lesser known? Adding an antidepressant, such as Zoloft (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sertraline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sertraline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), ups those chances. Zoloft slows down your body\u2019s absorption of serotonin, which helps improve mood. But serotonin has another role: It encourages platelets to clump together and form clots. When platelets absorb less serotonin, your blood doesn\u2019t clot as well. Ibuprofen\u2014commonly sold under the brands <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014also thins your blood in the process of relieving your fever, aches, or pains. If you\u2019re taking sertraline and ibuprofen (or any NSAID), the likelihood of bleeding increases to four times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince the two medications have a synergistic effect when taken together, meaning that you end up with more of each medication when taken together compared to when each is taken alone, the side effects will then also be increased,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hgpharmacist.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Plummer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., a pharmacist based in Nevada. Some studies show that taking these two medications together increases your chances of bleeding<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1884264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by 10 times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she explains.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain patients are at a higher risk for bleeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people taking Zoloft won\u2019t experience any issues with occasional ibuprofen use. \u201cPeople who have pre-existing conditions that render their platelet counts already low &#8230; or who have inherited dysfunctional platelets like Von Willebrand disease, may need to exercise more caution,\u201d explains Dr. Snyder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with the following medical conditions are at higher risk, according to Dr. Plummer:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, including GERD (reflux) and ulcers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients taking warfarin or aspirin (or any other medications that impacts the likelihood of bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elderly patients<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Plummer goes on to explain there are some signs that there\u2019s been an interaction between the two drugs. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unusual or excessive bleeding (including cuts or nosebleeds)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unusual or excessive bruising\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red, black, or tarry stools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleeding from gums after bruising (that is excessive or unusual)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coughing up fresh blood or dried blood that looks similar to coffee ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavier than usual menstrual flow, accompanied by headache and\/or dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of blood loss such as lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, or weakness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately, and discontinue taking the ibuprofen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I take acetaminophen with Zoloft?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Dr. Plummer and Dr. Snyder agreed that an Advil here or there is probably okay. However, they both advised against chronic usage of the two medications together.
