What is the difference between seasonal and perennial allergies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Seasonal allergies, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis, generally occur around the same time each year. In many areas of the U.S., spring allergies start in February, lasting until early summer. In the late summer and fall, ragweed and mold allergies may be more common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Perennial allergies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can affect you year-round\u2014not just allergy season\u2014or occur intermittently at different times. You may think you\u2019re going to pop in for a box of Claritin, and then see 24 different kinds of Claritin: brand, generic, different dosages, and various forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy medications generally fall into the following four categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Oral antihistamines:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These meds block histamine and can help symptoms of sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/postnasal-drip-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-nasal drip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an older, first generation antihistamine, which can cause more side effects like drowsiness, dizziness,\u00a0 and impaired coordination. Newer antihistamines, like Claritin (loratadine), Allegra (fexofenadine), Zyrtec (cetirizine), and Xyzal (levocetirizine), may still cause some drowsiness, but to a less extent than older antihistamines.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decongestants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These help relieve a stuffy nose.
