Instead, its side effects make it a good <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use for acne: It is an anti-androgen medication. Meaning, it blocks androgens, a type of sex hormone, from binding to oil glands (androgen receptors), reduces the secretion of androgen hormones from the adrenal gland, and prevents stimulation of oil production, which can lead to pimples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also often prescribed for female patients who experience cystic acne, a type of pimple that sits deep in the surface of the skin rather than on top of it. Cystic acne happens when skin pores become clogged, then infected. It\u2019s common along the jawline and on the chin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, spironolactone can also block testosterone and cause breast development in men, which is why it\u2019s only prescribed to women. Spironolactone might not be the right treatment for all women with acne. According to Dr. Zeichner, it can be a good fit for women who:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience hormonal acne or breakouts related to their menstrual cycle;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need systemic acne treatment to address severe acne or acne affecting large parts of the body;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have acne that is not well-controlled by topical treatments alone;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to avoid treating their acne with hormonal birth control;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and have recurrent acne once oral antibiotics have been discontinued.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/spironolactone\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spironolactone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often prescribed to teenagers and young adult females, though women who are pregnant, or who may become pregnant, should not take spironolactone. Its feminizing effects could affect the fetus, so the testosterone levels of a male fetus could be impacted by the mother\u2019s spironolactone use during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does spironolactone take to work for acne?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can take about three months for the drug to have a noticeable effect on acne, and it\u2019s not a one-time treatment, says Dr. Zeichner. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/acne\/derm-treat\/hormonal-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spironolactone can be effective in the treatment of deep, tender acne that is located on the jawline, neck, and lower face. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5440451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among 85 women who took the drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one third had a total clearing of their acne, and one third experienced noticeable results. Only 7% of the individuals observed saw no improvement in the severity of their acne. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5419026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when combined with certain hormonal therapies like oral contraceptive pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spironolactone may be even more effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do you stay on spironolactone for acne?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you discontinue spironolactone, the skin slowly will return back to what it\u2019s genetically programmed to do,\u201d he explains. \u201cAcne typically returns within a few months [after stopping the drug].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spironolactone dosage for acne<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The typical dose of spironolactone for acne is 25 to 200 milligrams per day; according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3315877\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients should start with the lowest dose and increase slowly over time if needed. Patients often experience improvement of acne, as well as fewer side effects, at lower doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take spironolactone for acne?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any drug, spironolactone may cause side effects in some patients and not in others. It\u2019s important to discuss these possible side effects with your doctor\u2014and inform them of any other medications you\u2019re taking\u2014before taking it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spironolactone for acne side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential side effects of spironolactone include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular periods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased potassium levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Zeichner says many of these side effects are more likely when the medication is given at higher doses. It\u2019s worth noting that there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-does-it-mean-if-my-medication-has-a-black-box-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the drug, but it may not be a cause for genuine concern if you are an otherwise healthy female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn one study in rats spironolactone caused solid organ tumors, however it has not been shown to be a problem in humans,\u201d advises Dr. Zeichner. The amount of the drug given to rats in the study was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/cancer-care\/patient-education\/hydrochlorothiazide-and-spironolactone-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly higher than the one prescribed to women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spironolactone does not typically cause depression or mood changes. If you do notice changes in mood while taking it, let your healthcare provider know. Sometimes, spironolactone is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/treating-female-pattern-hair-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed to promote hair growth in women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it\u2019s an antiandrogen\u2014that means it blocks the male hormones that may lead to hair loss in women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the drug decreases fluid retention, you may lose a small amount of weight while taking it. There isn\u2019t any evidence that spironolactone works as a weight loss medication, but it may help with premenstrual bloating and is often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2016\/0801\/p236.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed to treat symptoms of PMS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to actually taking spironolactone, Dr. Zeichner recommends taking it with food for better absorption. Because sodium and potassium levels are impacted by the drug, you should monitor your intake of both. There is a chance that your potassium levels could become fatally high while taking spironolactone (known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/atoz\/content\/what-hyperkalemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperkalemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so you should avoid eating large amounts of potassium-containing foods such as bananas, avocados, and spinach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics like spironolactone are processed through the renal system, so patients with kidney disease should avoid taking this drug. Patients who take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winchesterhospital.org\/health-library\/article?id=21463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, other drugs containing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682627.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spironolactone or diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (especially triamterene and eplerenone), and other blood pressure medications<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should also avoid taking spironolactone. Patients should also avoid potassium supplements as well as salt substitutes that contain potassium while taking spironolactone.
