With social media and digital news readily available, getting accurate information is easier than ever. Unfortunately, false information is just as easily transmitted. It\u2019s hard to know what to do and how worried you should be\u2014especially since those guidelines are ever-changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>14 COVID myths debunked<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the most common COVID myths (and COVID vaccine myths) circulating, and the coronavirus facts that you need to fight the spread of disinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #1: COVID-19 is the same as the flu<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some of the symptoms are similar between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 and the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sore throat, coughing, fever), they are different respiratory viruses with different characteristics and treatments. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The flu is caused by the influenza virus. Both conditions can have serious complications and be fatal, but the mortality rate of COVID is much higher (possibly 10 times higher than the flu).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #2: There\u2019s no point in trying to slow the spread of COVID-19\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are you have heard (or said), \u201cEveryone\u2019s going to get COVID eventually, so why bother?\u201d Or maybe, \u201cNow that there\u2019s a vaccine, we don\u2019t need to worry.\u201d\u00a0 Some even say, \u201cNow that others are vaccinated, I do not need to vaccinate myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the vaccine does reduce the likelihood of severe complications, and new coronavirus variants like Omicron spread quickly, there are still good reasons to take measures to slow the spread. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoiding overwhelming hospitals: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If more people get moderate or severe COVID at once, more hospital resources will be needed. This puts a strain on everyone in the healthcare system. This increases healthcare professionals experiencing burnout and increases the people who help us getting COVID themselves and needing to isolate (and not work). If the hospitals are overwhelmed with COVID patients, others who need care (awaiting surgeries, chemotherapy, advanced imaging) will receive delayed care.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protecting others: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing an N95 mask and isolating is necessary if you have COVID, but what if you have it and don\u2019t know it? It is possible to have, and spread, COVID <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-covid-spreads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without having symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Maintaining measures (such as mask wearing and handwashing) can help protect others, especially those who are at risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Preventing complications: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people who catch COVID can have effects that last weeks, months, or longer, even if their initial symptoms are mild. The best way to avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/coronavirus\/covid-long-haulers-long-term-effects-of-covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term effects from COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not to get it at all.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As lockdowns are lifted and mandates are removed, COVID-19 is still considered a public health emergency and it\u2019s still worth it to use measures to slow the spread and minimize human transmission, such as wearing a mask indoors and sneezing or coughing into your elbow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #3: Face masks can\u2019t protect you from coronavirus<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/face-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing a mask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps prevent people with COVID from spreading it to others and it also protects you from catching it. Different masks offer different levels of protection:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loosely woven cloth products: Least protection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Layered finely woven products: More protection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s: Good protection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators, including N95s: Highest level of protection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recommends wearing the most protective mask you can that fits well and that you will wear consistently. More information on types of masks can be found on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/types-of-masks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the level of protection matters, any mask is better than no mask.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #4: COVID-19 only affects seniors or immunocompromised people<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks for serious complications from COVID are higher in seniors and those who are immunocompromised, but they can happen to anyone. COVID-19 has caused <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/2019-novel-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious illness and fatalities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in younger and middle-aged adults who were otherwise healthy. While children typically have milder symptoms, some children, even those without previous health problems, can have serious cases or have lingering symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #5: COVID-19 always has a short recovery period<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road to recovery is not the same for everyone. People who have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID-19 typically recover in about two weeks, but severe cases may take up to six weeks or longer. \u201cThere is a large spectrum in terms of COVID recovery,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/vickenzeitjianmd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicken Zeitjian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an internist in San Antonio, Texas. \u201cI have seen patients go through COVID asymptomatic while others have long-COVID symptoms for up to six months to a year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) cause damage to the lungs and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other organs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, weight and strength loss, or other factors that extend recovery time. Some people, including those who have a mild initial case, can experience lasting symptoms called long-COVID. It is estimated that 13 million Americans have long-COVID. Symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-sequelae\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall feeling of being unwell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble concentrating\/brain fog<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain\/body aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intermittent fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because COVID-19 has only been around for a relatively short period of time, it isn\u2019t known how long these lingering symptoms can last.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #6: Antibiotics can prevent or treat COVID-19<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics are not used for COVID except to treat secondary infections such as bacterial pneumonia. \u201cCOVID is a virus, so antibiotics like azithromycin or doxycycline\u2014which are intended to treat bacteria\u2014are not effective in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/veklury-remdesivir-coronavirus-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treating any viral infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Zeitjian says. There are preventive medications and treatments for COVID-19 such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/paxlovid-for-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/evusheld-covid-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evusheld<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/molnupiravir-covid-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">molnupiravir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #7: Once you\u2019ve had COVID-19, you can\u2019t get it again<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to contract COVID again if you have already had it, especially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you are not vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People who are unvaccinated are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/can-you-get-covid-19-more-than-once\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.34 times more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get COVID again than those who are fully vaccinated. Health professionals agree: getting vaccinated is important, whether or not you have already had COVID.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #8: If your rapid test is negative, you\u2019re in the clear<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-tests, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/covid-19-at-home-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over-the-counter tests, etc. provide quick results and are a helpful tool in fighting the spread of COVID, but they come with precautions. A positive result on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/testing\/self-testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is highly reliable. If you test positive on a self-test, isolate yourself for five days. Even if you have no symptoms, take measures to protect others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A negative result on a self-test does not necessarily mean you don\u2019t have COVID. If you test negative, it\u2019s a good idea to retest in a day or two, especially if you have symptoms. Don\u2019t rely on a negative self-test as an assurance you are COVID-free. Continue to take measures such as wearing a mask when you are around others in order to protect them and yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/expired-covid-test\/\"><b>Do at-home COVID tests expire?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #9: The COVID-19 vaccine isn\u2019t effective<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting the vaccine is not a guarantee that you won\u2019t catch COVID, but it does decrease the chance of infection and helps prevent serious complications. \u201cThe current mRNA COVID vaccine does provide a degree of protection against both the Delta and Omicron variants,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telemed2u.com\/meet-our-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Javeed Siddiqui,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, MPH, the co-founder and chief medical officer at TeleMed2U in California. \u201cOur clinical experience has been that individuals who are fully vaccinated and subsequently get infected with these variants have had a lower intensity of symptoms and possibly a shorter duration of symptoms. In addition, fully vaccinated individuals have had a significantly decreased rate of hospitalization and a significantly decreased rate of death secondary to COVID-19 infection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying up to date with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/covid-booster-shot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended boosters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases this protection against current and possible future variants. People who are vaccinated and boosted are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/covidplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41 times less likely to die of COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than those who are unvaccinated. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/immuno.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recently recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a second mRNA booster to all people aged 50 and older and to people older than 11 with moderate to severe immunocompromised conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #10: The COVID-19 vaccine isn\u2019t safe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 vaccines have been evaluated for safety and efficacy through measures such as clinical trials, authorization or approval, and tracking safety using vaccine monitoring systems. \u201cThe COVID-19 vaccine is safe for most people, including those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pregnancy-and-covid-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and children over 5 years of age as recommended by the CDC,\u201d Dr Zeitjian says. \u201cAny person receiving the vaccine should weigh the risk\/benefits of the vaccine based on the accumulated scientific data. Those who should not obtain the vaccine include those who developed anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction within four hours of a prior COVID-19 vaccine. In my opinion, MRNA vaccines are the safest, which include Pfizer and Moderna.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Zeitjian notes that serious side effects from a COVID-19 vaccine are rare. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle): 1.4 cases per 100,000 vaccinations. Myocarditis is 20 times more likely in those who get infected with the virus compared to the chance of getting myocarditis from the COVID vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia (blood clots as well as low platelet count): 3.8 cases per million vaccinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillain-Barre syndrome (an autoimmune disorder that affects the nerves): 9.8 cases per million vaccinations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBenefits of vaccination outweigh the risks,\u201d Dr. Siddiqui says. \u201cSerious side effects that could cause long-term health problems are extremely unusual following any vaccination, including COVID-19 vaccination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #11: The COVID-19 vaccine can cause \u201cshedding\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine shedding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means any vaccine components being released or discharged in or outside of the body. Shedding can occur with vaccines containing a live (weakened version) of the virus. \u201cThe SARS-CoV-2 vaccines do not contain a live virus,\u201d says Dr. Siddiqui. \u201cThe mRNA vaccines in particular only contain fragments of mRNA and thereby they are not capable of causing any viral shedding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #12: The COVID-19 vaccine impacts fertility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine may have a slight influence on the menstrual cycle, but evidence does not show the vaccine causing disruption to fertility.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe NIH (National Institutes of Health) has indicated that women who received COVID-19 vaccines had a less than one-day increase in the length of their menstrual cycles around the time of their doses,\u201d says Dr. Siddiqui. \u201cThe findings suggest that women may have a slightly longer menstrual cycle after COVID-19 vaccination, but the change is temporary and within the range of normal variation.\u201d Conversely, if you get the COVID infection while pregnant, you are more likely to miscarry or have a fetal death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #13: The COVID-19 vaccine contains magnets or microchips<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conspiracy theories circulated that the vaccine was a government plot to insert trackers into the population at large. COVID-19 vaccines do not contain microchips, magnets, ingredients that can produce an electromagnetic field at the site of the injection, or any type of metals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>COVID myth #14: The COVID-19 vaccine can change your DNA<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, COVID-19 vaccines do not interact with your DNA in any way and cannot change it. Learn more about how vaccines work on the CDC website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 facts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best antidote to COVID-19 misinformation is arming yourself with the facts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus spreads through close contact with respiratory droplets and very small particles that are expelled by an infected person when they breathe, cough, or sneeze. Open air spaces and proper ventilation can help reduce the spread.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re unlikely to catch COVID-19 from touching a surface, such as a doorknob or counter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herd immunity (when enough people in the population are immune to a disease that those who aren\u2019t immune are protected) is currently difficult to achieve with COVID-19 due to vaccine hesitancy and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/new-covid-strain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">existence of variants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But some infectious disease experts believe it is still possible if vaccine confidence and vaccination rates increase.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to not become ill from COVID is to get vaccinated and boosted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facts about the COVID vaccine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help fight vaccine misinformation with these details:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID vaccine is a safe and effective way to slow the spread of COVID and greatly reduce the chances of serious complications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNatural immunity\u201d from catching COVID is not a sufficient enough protection against COVID.
