But what exactly does that mean? Is a mild case similar to a respiratory illness like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common cold or the seasonal flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? What separates a mild case of coronavirus from a moderate one? What COVID symptoms make a case severe?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronaviruses are a family of viruses, but this is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coronavirus, officially called SARS-CoV-2. This novel coronavirus, also called COVID-19, first surfaced in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019 and was transmitted to humans from an animal source. Experts have learned, and are still learning, about the different ways it affects people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing experts know for sure: It\u2019s a fairly contagious virus that is spread through aerosols (e.g., airborne particles much smaller than droplets that linger in air) as well as droplets (e.g., the sneezes and coughs) of infected people. Touching respiratory droplets as well as touching an infected person, will also transmit the virus. This is why handwashing, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-isolation-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social distancing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, self-isolation, and vaccination are so important in slowing coronavirus transmission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/does-hand-sanitizer-expire\/\"><b>Does hand sanitizer expire?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 cases<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2762130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that the vast majority of COVID-19 cases fall into the least severe category:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mild to moderate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 81%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Severe:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 14%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Critical:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 5%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age seems to be a strong factor in who gets the sickest. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/clinical-guidance-management-patients.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild symptoms of COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-grade fever (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New loss of taste or smell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy, painful patches on skin (especially in young people). These patches often show up on the toes and have been referred to as \u201cCOVID toes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith a mild case, you might feel as though you have a cold,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.com\/physician\/carl-fichtenbaum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carl J. Fichtenbaum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, professor of clinical medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. \u201cThe symptoms are annoying, but you feel as though you can carry on with most of what you need to do without feeling too impaired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fever-temperature\/?preview_id=14098&amp;preview_nonce=88235f5390&amp;_thumbnail_id=14102&amp;preview=true#when-to-call-doctor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever of &gt;100.4 degrees Fahrenheit<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills, with repeated shaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue and body aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General feeling of being unwell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese people will have some of the same symptoms as those with a mild case of COVID-19, but the fever may be a little higher, the coughing deeper, and they may feel more rundown,\u201d notes Dr. Fichetenbaum. \u201cThey\u2019ll generally feel sicker.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some or all the common COVID symptoms mentioned above along with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath, even when you\u2019re not exerting yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion\/unresponsiveness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble staying awake<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye problems, such as watery eyes or swollen eyelids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bluish face\/lips (a sign you\u2019re not getting enough oxygen)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing issues are a medical emergency. Call your healthcare provider or 911 for immediate guidance. COVID-19 can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pneumonia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lung scarring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-pneumonia-contagious\/\"><b>Is pneumonia contagious?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus incubation period and recovery time\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID incubation period\u2014the time between when you\u2019re infected with the virus and when symptoms start\u2014is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/symptoms-testing\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to 14 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a median of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/clinical-guidance-management-patients.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four to five days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Research shows that the vast majority of people infected with the virus will start to show symptoms by about 11 to 12 days. Recovery for those with severe cases can take three to six weeks, and even longer in some cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible to start out with a mild case of coronavirus and have it turn severe. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timing of this will depend on each individual\u2019s immune system and underlying health conditions. There have been reports of symptoms developing very rapidly, over the course of hours, and other cases that take days to evolve,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hhs\/nur\/directory\/faculty\/richards_libby.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libby Richards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ph.D., RN, CHES, associate professor at the Purdue University School of Nursing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you get reinfected with the virus after you recover? Experts are still researching this. But the CDC does say that reinfection with COVID-19 is highly unlikely in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first three months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after you\u2019ve been infected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus treatments<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While scientists have developed COVID vaccines, as of now, there\u2019s no \u201ccure\u201d for the infectious disease. Treatment for mild to moderate cases of this coronavirus involves what doctors call supportive care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That includes rest, drinking lots of fluids, and taking over-the-counter pain and fever relievers, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More severe cases, especially when there\u2019s difficulty breathing, may need hospitalization. \u201cWe\u2019ll want to evaluate these people,\u201d says Dr. Fichtenbaum. \u201cWe\u2019ll want to see what their oxygen levels are, if they\u2019re well hydrated, and if they\u2019ll need help breathing with respirators or mechanical ventilators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-covid-19-treatments\/\"><b>Current COVID-19 treatments<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to go to the doctor<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/if-you-are-sick\/steps-when-sick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advises people to call their healthcare providers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-what-to-do-if-you-are-sick\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if they think they may have been exposed to the coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also develop a low-grade fever, cough, or slight shortness of breath. It\u2019s important to call first so the staff can take measures to safeguard their own health and that of other patients if they want you to come in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all fevers or coughs will be due to the coronavirus. To help you get a better grasp of whether you might be suffering from COVID-19 or another respiratory illness, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umms.org\/coronavirus\/what-to-know\/symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Maryland Medical System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advises you ask yourself the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have COVID-19 symptoms?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you visited an area that has high community transmission of COVID 19?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you had close contact with a person known to be infected with COVID-19 (e.g., have you spent extended periods of time i.e., 10 minutes or more with a person with a confirmed case of coronavirus and have you had less than six feet separating you)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you at higher risk for contracting the coronavirus? For example, are you an older adult, especially one with a severe illness or chronic disease?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having any of the symptoms suggesting a severe case of COVID-19, contact your healthcare provider immediately, or dial 911.
