For the latest on the COVID-19 pandemic, please visit the<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of buzz around the novel coronavirus\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/human-coronavirus-myths\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what it is<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its cold- and flu-like symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/preparing-for-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to prepare for it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but there\u2019s been more speculation about how it\u2019s being treated. Although there is no FDA-approved coronavirus treatment in the U.S., Favilavir is being tested in China as a possible first treatment for COVID-19. There is limited information on this drug, the foreign market uses different terminology. The following is based on what we found in our research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-covid-19-treatments\">Learn more about other Coronavirus \/ COVID 19 treatments<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Favilavir?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Favilavir (favipiravir) is an antiviral drug made in China by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hisunpharm.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Based on what we can find, it appears that The National Medical Products Administration of China has approved Favilavir for clinical testing in patients for investigational COVID-19 treatment. Favilavir is currently approved for marketing in the treatment of influenza. It is also currently used in Japan for influenza under the brand-name Avigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s Ministry of Science and Technology reported that Favilavir showed promise in an ongoing clinical trial of 70 patients in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. Side effects of Favilavir were not specified but characterized as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaltrialsarena.com\/analysis\/coronavirus-mers-cov-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Favilavir an antiviral drug?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Favilavir is an antiviral drug that is approved in China for influenza treatment and is now approved for clinical trials to see if it works for coronavirus treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Favilavir work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Favilavir\u2019s drug mechanism of action is as an antiviral. It at\u00adtacks RNA virus\u00ades by in\u00adhibit\u00ading RdRp (RNA-de\u00adpen\u00addent RNA poly\u00admerase).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Favilavir approved by the FDA?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Favilavir is not currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Favilavir the same as Fapilavir?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Favilavir was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmaceutical-technology.com\/news\/china-approves-favilavir-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">formerly called Fapilavir<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0but is now called Favilavir. The reason for the name change is not clear. The active ingredient is favipiravir.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When will Favilavir be available to patients?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Favilavir is available to patients in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/endpts.com\/china-approves-flu-drug-being-touted-as-a-potential-coronavirus-treatment-amid-a-rush-of-clinical-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also available to patients in China who are being treated for influenza and is being used in clinical trials for coronavirus treatment.
