Seasonal allergies tend to peak in the spring, summer, and early fall, when certain grasses, trees, weeds, and fungi bloom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical allergy symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose or nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy, watery eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More severe allergy symptoms can cause wheezing or shortness of breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronaviruses are nothing new\u2014some, in fact, cause the ever-prevalent common cold. But, the novel coronavirus surfaced in Wuhan, China in late 2019 and caused a global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Eye irritation is even considered a less common symptom by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/coronavirus#tab=tab_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO). One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2020.00473\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that COVID symptoms commonly occur in this order: fever, cough and muscle pain, nausea or vomiting, then diarrhea; however, symptoms vary from person to person and variant to variant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about if you have a fever? \u201cYou can have a very low-grade fever of, for example, 99 degrees, with severe allergies,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/faculty-profiles\/az\/profile.html?xid=10719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Marie Ditto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an associate professor of medicine in the division of allergy and immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. \u201cBut a fever is usually more indicative of a viral infection, including this coronavirus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><b>How are symptoms of COVID-19 different from the flu?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"transmission\">You can \u201ccatch\u201d the coronavirus, but not allergies<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus transmission occurs much like other respiratory infections do\u2014from the droplets of infected people. You can pick up the virus when an infected person sneezes or coughs on you, you touch a surface, or you are in close proximity to someone for 15 minutes or more. This is why it\u2019s so important, experts say, that you regularly and thoroughly wash your hands, disinfect surfaces, distance yourself from sick people when possible, wear a mask in crowded places, and avoid touching your face with your hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies, on the other hand, are not contagious. They\u2019re triggered when your immune system\u2014for reasons that aren\u2019t fully understood\u2014mistakes a harmless substance (such as sprouting trees, grasses, weeds, etc.) as a foreign invader and launches a campaign to protect your body. Cue the sneezing, coughing, itching, and general misery allergies bring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to help determine if you\u2019re suffering with symptoms of allergies or coronavirus is to take a trip down memory lane. Think back to last spring and the spring before and the spring before that. Do you typically have a runny nose and itchy eyes when the calendar flips from March to April? That\u2019s a good indication you have seasonal allergies and not the coronavirus. According to Dr. Ditto, allergies typically don\u2019t develop later in life. So, if you\u2019re an adult and are suddenly experiencing symptoms like a runny nose or a cough, it\u2019s unlikely they\u2019re due to allergies if you never had them before. However, because the symptoms overlap, the best way to know for sure is to get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/expired-covid-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"severity\">One\u2019s riskier than the other<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can die from severe allergic reactions to certain foods (think nuts or eggs), medications (like penicillin), or materials (such as latex). \u201cAllergic rhinitis [aka, a runny, stuffy nose and itchy watery eyes], while uncomfortable, is not fatal,\u201d Dr. Ditto says. But some of the complications of allergies, such as asthma, can be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC, most cases of COVID-19 are mild, but cases can turn severe, especially if you\u2019re older or have other health issues like diabetes or heart disease. Other things to note:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can take two to 14 days for COVID-19 symptoms to appear <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after exposure to the virus. This is called the incubation period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>COVID-19 is very contagious.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has the ability to spread widely, even in vaccinated people or those without symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interestingly, the number of people affected by seasonal allergies also seem to be on the upswing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due, at least in part, say experts at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/news\/rise-spring-allergies-fact-or-fiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACAAI), to climate change.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"allergies-and-COVID\">Can you have allergies and COVID-19 at the same time?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have allergies and are also experiencing coronavirus symptoms, treat both conditions. \u201cOther diseases will still occur during this pandemic,\u201d cautions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/doctors\/20771\/Shuhan-He\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shuhan He<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency physician in Boston and the founder of Conduct Science<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHaving allergies and COVID-19 at the same time will probably make you more uncomfortable, but your treatment plan shouldn\u2019t change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment\">What\u2019s the treatment?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/8-ways-treat-seasonal-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for seasonal allergies includes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter nasal sprays and eye drops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decongestants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), which involves receiving tiny amounts of the thing(s) you\u2019re allergic to (often via injection) until you become desensitized to it and your immune system stops fighting it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following treatments for COVID-19 are available and supported by safety and efficacy data:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/paxlovid-for-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/monoclonal-antibodies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotrovimab<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/remdesivir\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remdesivir<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/monoclonal-antibodies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bebtelovimab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/molnupiravir-covid-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molnupiravir<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers also advise a fever reducer like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resting, and fluids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\">Prevention<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing allergies means avoiding the things that trigger them.
