Urine drug screens are the most common test (although other body fluids may be analyzed). The test, an immunoassay that uses antibodies to detect drugs and their metabolites, is simple and painless and only requires a urine sample. It can feel a little unnerving to be asked to take a drug test, and it is important to know that there are some medications and other substances that could cause a false positive drug test result.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-drug-tests-detect\"><b>What can drug tests detect?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug tests can identify various substances commonly associated with abuse or misuse, including drugs like marijuana (THC), crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, PCP, and heroin. They can also detect prescription medications, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, amphetamines, methadone, and opioids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug tests are generally reliable. Still, certain factors, including specific medications, can produce false positive results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-false-positive-drug-test\"><b>What is a false positive drug test?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201cfalse positive\u201d result occurs when the analytical drug detection method recognizes some of the molecules in the body as illegal drugs when you haven\u2019t ingested any illegal substances. Drugs that are typically screened for include amphetamines, methamphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, marijuana, cocaine, PCP, methadone, MDMA, and opioids. Some of the above, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and prescription opioids like oxycodone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fentanyl\/dosage\">fentanyl<\/a>, and codeine, may be legally or illegally obtained. Other examples, such as cocaine and PCP, are illicit substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rttnews.com\/amp\/1323040\/new-study-shows-inconsistencies-in-drug-testing.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted at Boston Medical Center shows that drug tests produce false positives in 5% to 10% of cases. Although this is not a high percentage, the consequences of failing a drug test could jeopardize your career, education, or job prospects. Several common prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbs, vitamins, and even some foods could trigger a false positive drug test. According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20689123\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, false positive drug tests are most commonly reported for amphetamine and methamphetamine. That\u2019s because common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/drugs-abuse-tests\/drugs-abuse-home-use-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications can result in false positives for these substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to prescriptions, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warnings are available, but usually only if you look for them,\u201d s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ays <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brent McFadden, Pharm.D., the owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brentspharmacy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brent&#8217;s Pharmacy &amp; Diabetes Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in St. George, Utah. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is usually in the fine print, and most people, in my experience, don&#8217;t read the material given to them by the pharmacist.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rttnews.com\/amp\/1323040\/new-study-shows-inconsistencies-in-drug-testing.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that 10% to 15% of drug tests yield false negative results. While urine drug tests are most commonly used, their accuracy depends on several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.testing.com\/tests\/urine-drug-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the frequency of drug use and how fast the drug is metabolized by the body. It\u2019s important to note that no drug test is 100% accurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"13-medications-that-cause-false-positive-drug-tests\"><b>13 medications that cause false positive drug tests<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you are like most people who don\u2019t take the time to study the fine print, here is a list of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications that could cause a false positive drug test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-analgesics-nsaids\"><b>1. Analgesics\/ NSAIDS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/daypro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daypro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxaprozin), which is prescribed for types of arthritis, may result in a false positive test for benzodiazepines. The pain medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tramadol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could trigger a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4384887\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false positive result for PCP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In rare cases, common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medications such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ibuprofen) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (naproxen) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could make you test positive for barbiturates and THC (marijuana\/cannabinoids). Ibuprofen can also make you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5720316\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">test positive for PCP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-antibiotics\"><b>2. Antibiotics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinolone antibiotics are commonly prescribed for certain infections (urinary tract, sinus, etc.). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may trigger a false positive urine result for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S000991201930092X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opiates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/moxifloxacin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avelox (moxifloxacin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may trigger a false positive for amphetamines. Rifampin, an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis, can also lead to a false positive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10498289\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result for opiates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-antidepressants\"><b>3. Antidepressants<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspharmacist.com\/article\/urine-drug-screening-minimizing-false-positives-and-false-negatives-to-optimize-patient-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain antidepressants can cause false positive drug test results. For example, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Zoloft (sertraline)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause false-positive results for benzodiazepines and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or for LSD and amphetamines, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antidepressants <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bupropion-hcl-er-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bupropion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trazodone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause a false positive result for amphetamines or LSD. A false positive result for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5720316\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can occur in individuals taking the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pristiq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pristiq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/desvenlafaxine-succinate-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desvenlafaxine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/effexor-xr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effexor XR (<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/venlafaxine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">venlafaxine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-antihistamines\"><b>4. Antihistamines<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines and some sleep aids containing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) could cause a false positive result for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20838187\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methadone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or, rarely, PCP. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxylamine-succinate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doxylamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the active ingredient in Unisom) may also trigger a positive drug result for methadone, opiates, and PCP.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-central-nervous-system-cns-stimulants\"><b>5. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methylphenidate-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methylphenidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are well known to cause a positive test result for amphetamines and methamphetamines, so tell the lab that you take this medication before your appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-cough-suppressant\"><b>6. Cough suppressant<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dextromethorphan, the active ingredient in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/robitussin-dm-max-day-night\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robitussin-DM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/delsym\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delsym<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other over-the-counter and prescription cough suppressants or combination cold and flu products, may cause a drug screen to be positive for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/labmed\/article-abstract\/41\/8\/457\/2657548\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opiates or PCP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cough-syrup-addiction-abuse\/\"><b>Learn the dangers of a cough syrup addiction<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-decongestants\"><b>7. Decongestants<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The active ingredient in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pseudoephedrine) is also the main ingredient in the illicit making of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth. Proton pump inhibitors<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omeprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/esomeprazole-magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esomeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pantoprazole-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protonix (pantoprazole)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lansoprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevacid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lansoprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lansoprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peptic ulcer disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PUD)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can cause a false positive for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ajg\/fulltext\/2016\/10001\/ppi_and_false_positive_thc_screen__false_positive.2331.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-weight-loss-pills\"><b>9. Weight loss pills<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weight loss drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24951536\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phentermine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may produce a false positive drug test. That\u2019s because the chemical structure of phentermine is similar to that of amphetamine, so if you\u2019re taking the drug, it is likely to appear as a positive result on a 5-panel urinalysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-hiv-medication\"><b>10. HIV medication<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking the HIV medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/efavirenz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efavirenz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may obtain false positive drug test results. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/48\/12\/1787\/322137\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 49 out of 50 patients taking the drug tested positive for benzodiazepines. As well, false positive urine tests for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2016\/020972s049-021360s038lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabinoids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been reported among those taking efavirenz.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"11-blood-pressure-medications\"><b>11. Blood pressure medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/labetalol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a685034.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a beta-blocker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat hypertension, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cardizem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardizem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diltiazem-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diltiazem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a684027.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blocker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat hypertension and chest pain, may result in false positive drug test results for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jat\/article\/38\/7\/387\/2798054\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Labetalol can also cause a false positive for amphetamine or methamphetamine because a labetalol metabolite is structurally similar to amphetamine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"12-metformin\"><b>12. Metformin<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a drug commonly used to reduce the blood sugar of patients with diabetes. The drug has been linked to false-positive drug test results for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dig.pharmacy.uic.edu\/faqs\/2021-2\/may-2021-faqs\/what-drugs-are-likely-to-interfere-with-urine-drug-screens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphetamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"13-prednisone\"><b>13. Prednisone<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone is a corticosteroid that is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31701669\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detectable in your urine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so if you are taking the drug, you may test positive for steroids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My recommendation to anyone taking these medicines who might be drug tested is, first and foremost, to be honest with the tester,\u201d says Dr. McFadden. \u201cKnow if the meds you are taking might cause a false positive and notify the administrator of the test. If it is prescribed, make sure you have the label from the pharmacy, which will show that the medication was prescribed to you. If it is an OTC product, have some kind of documentation (the container it was in, a note from your physician, etc.) that you have taken it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-substances-can-cause-a-false-positive\"><b>What substances can cause a false positive?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to prescription medications, these other common substances can lead to a false positive drug test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-cbd-cannabidiol\"><b>1. CBD (<\/b><b>cannabidiol)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cbd-drug-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the non-psychoactive portion of the marijuana plant that has become a very popular remedy for everything from pain control to promoting sleep to helping relieve anxiety. Mouthwash<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol in hand sanitizer (from heavy or frequent use), certain liquid medications, and mouthwash or other breath-cleaning products containing alcohol could potentially cause you to test positive for drinking alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-tonic-water\"><b>5. Tonic water<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tonic water contains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quinine, and when consumed in large amounts, could lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2728958\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false positive results for illicit drug use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-coca-tea\"><b>6.
