But if you can remember back to February 2003, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first pandemic of the 21st century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over 17 years ago, SARS was reported in Asia and a global outbreak infected a total of 8,098 people worldwide. Of these, 774 died, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/sars\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Later, it was found that SARS was caused by a coronavirus called SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Sound familiar? While there are similarities, these two respiratory illnesses are quite distinct. Learn the differences between COVID-19 and SARS and the best practices to prevent infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes SARS and COVID-19?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both SARS and COVID-19 are respiratory illnesses that are caused by a specific human coronavirus. But the important fact to note here is that they are caused by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific coronaviruses. COVID-19 is caused by a novel coronavirus called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/summary.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SARS-CoV-2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Centers of Disease Prevention. SARS is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-associated coronavirus, or SARS-CoV. So what\u2019s a coronavirus?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are defined by the lipid envelope that surrounds them,\u201d says Andrew Pavia, MD, the chief of division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Utah. \u201cThis casing of fats protects the virus\u2014and that\u2019s how they survive on surfaces for a variable length of time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the symptoms of SARS and COVID-19?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SARS can be difficult to recognize because it mimics other respiratory diseases, such as influenza, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome-sars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms of SARS are flu-like, beginning with a fever higher than 100.4\u00b0 F (38\u00b0 C). SARS symptoms progress to include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall feeling of discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body aches and chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pneumonia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoxia (insufficient oxygen in the blood)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea (for 10% to 20% of patients)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/sars\/diagnostictests\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no test to diagnose SARS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the symptoms of COVID-19, they are similar\u2014but people can also carry the disease while asymptomatic. Meaning, people who don\u2019t feel sick could still spread the disease and those infected can carry the virus for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/about\/symptoms.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two days or even up to two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before symptoms present. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/sars\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351765\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people older than 60\u2014especially those with underlying conditions such as diabetes or hepatitis\u2014are at the highest risk of serious complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As COVID-19 is new and still being studied, there is not a definitive death rate and it seems to differ by country. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/opsdashboard\/index.html#\/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins COVID-19 tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> counts the latest confirmed cases and deaths. Those most seriously affected are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are immunocompromised<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with other health conditions like heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/chronic-disease-and-covid-19\/\"><b>Are people with chronic diseases more vulnerable to coronavirus?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the treatments for these illnesses?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554776\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19, and no vaccine is currently available. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-covid-19-treatments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those who are diagnosed is medications for symptom relief, such as ibuprofen and cough suppressants. Oxygen therapy is the main treatment intervention for patients with severe infection. SARS-CoV is being tested against various antiviral drugs to see if an effective treatment can be found. Additionally, there has been research for a SARS vaccine, but no vaccine has proven effective or is available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do SARS and COVID-19 spread?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 spread by close person-to-person contact and are thought to be transmitted most readily by respiratory droplets (droplet spread) produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. According to the CDC, droplet spread can happen when droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled a short distance (generally up to 3 feet) through the air and deposited on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes of persons who are nearby. The virus also can spread when a person touches a surface or object contaminated with infectious droplets and then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How can you prevent these illnesses?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is recommended to avoid all unnecessary travel and contact with others during a pandemic, practicing good hygiene is the number one way to prevent contracting illnesses in both times of pandemic and all other times. Therefore, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to wash your hands to prevent both SARS and COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/preparing-for-coronavirus\/\"><b>The do\u2019s and don&#8217;ts of preparing for coronavirus<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCleaning products and good hygiene are very effective and should be the front line,\u201d Dr. Pavia says. \u201cSoap removes superficial contamination and breaks down the fatty envelope that protects coronaviruses\u2014just like it does with grease on our dishes\u2014and removes any contamination from our skin. Soap removes the virus and the mucous associated with the virus from your skin and if it\u2019s not on your skin, it\u2019s not going to get inside of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pavia recommends singing \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d in your head twice while washing your hands carefully with soap (he says any kind\u2014whether it\u2019s natural, dish soap, bar soap, or liquid antibacterial soap works) and warm water. Additionally, it\u2019s important to keep the surfaces that you come into contact with often clean as well. \u201cI recommend regularly cleaning bannisters, door knobs, faucets, computer keyboards, phones, and other daily items clean\u2014either by washing them with soap and water or wiping them down with Clorox wipes or something similar. When was the last time most people cleaned their phones? You don\u2019t need to wash these things every hour compulsively, but it\u2019s reasonable\u2014and smart\u2014to give your phone a quick wipe once or twice a day.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, health professionals are recommending that you try and keep your face touching to an absolute minimum, as this is how these viruses are most often transported from contaminated surfaces to our membranes (aka mouths, noses, eyes).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the very-similar disease, SARS, is to always \u201ccatch\u201d your coughs and sneezes in the crook of your elbow, stay at home when possible, and avoid large crowds.
