In fact, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0sleep survey by SingleCare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 20% of respondents reported taking a natural supplement like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to sleep better. Because supplements aren\u2019t prescriptions, they\u2019re available over the counter and often considered a \u201cnatural\u201d or safer way to find relief from sleeplessness. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> melatonin safe to take? And how do you know what the right dose is for you? Here\u2019s how to figure it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-melatonin-help-you-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does melatonin help you sleep?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is produced by the <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourhormones.info\/glands\/pineal-gland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pineal gland<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a small gland in the brain),<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is often referred to as \u201cthe sleep hormone\u201d\u2014and for good reason! Natural melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating your body\u2019s sleep-wake-cycle, or circadian rhythm. Think of your circadian rhythm as the \u201cclock\u201d that tells your body what time of day it is and when it\u2019s time for bed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how does melatonin help you drift off into dreamland? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the sun sets and darkness envelops the environment, your body begins to produce more melatonin. This increase signals to your body that it&#8217;s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1855314\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secretion of the hormone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> peaks between 2-4 a.m., with levels of melatonin decreasing gradually from there. Essentially, melatonin helps to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/chapters\/87715\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower your body temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and relax your muscles, making it easier for you to fall asleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But being exposed to light too late in the day (or not enough early on) can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with melatonin production\u2014and that\u2019s not all. \u201cThe natural release of melatonin can be altered by cellphone screens, TVs, and bright lights throughout the house,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/doctor\/anjali-kohli\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anjali Kohli, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internist at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group. \u201cOther common causes include disturbances in the sleep-wake cycle [like those] caused by jet lag or shift work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not making enough melatonin can lead to the occasional sleepless night, but it can also cause sleep disorders like insomnia and circadian rhythm sleep disorder. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those struggling with insomnia or irregular sleep schedules, melatonin supplements can be a helpful tool. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kohli says that melatonin doesn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">force<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you to sleep, but if you\u2019re in the right environment\u2014like a dark, quiet, comfortable room\u2014it should help you feel drowsy and make it easier for you to drift off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin is a viable option for many people with sleep issues and, though it doesn\u2019t work for everyone, is generally considered effective. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signaling to your body that it&#8217;s time to sleep makes it easier to fall asleep faster and potentially enhances your sleep quality. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/sleep\/Pages\/Melatonin-and-Childrens-Sleep.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAP) reminds parents to always discuss supplement use with their child\u2019s pediatrician, especially since melatonin is a hormone and may affect the growth and development of a child who has not fully matured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-for-kids\/\"><b>Is melatonin safe for kids?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-melatonin-should-i-take\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much melatonin should I take?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin supplements are available in a wide range of dosages, from 1 milligram up to 10 milligrams, and can be taken in pill form, as dissolvable tablets, liquid drops, or even gummies. (Some manufacturers do make doses higher than 10 milligrams, but doses that high are not recommended.) However you take it, the best time to use melatonin is about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve never taken melatonin before, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/melatonin-how-much-should-i-take-for-a-good-nights-rest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start small<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gradually work your way up if needed. For adults, Dr. Kohli recommends beginning with a 1 to 2 milligram dose daily before bedtime and increasing the dosage by another 1 to 2 milligrams at a time, if needed. For children, the AAP says the dose should remain low (starting between 0.5 and 1 milligram), capping out at no more than 3 to 6 milligrams of melatonin. The maximum dosage for healthy adults ranges from 5 to 10 milligrams, but many adults do fine with 1 to 5 mg. If that sounds like a wide spectrum, it\u2019s because the \u201cright\u201d dose of melatonin is very individualized. According to University of Missouri Health Care neurologist Pradeep Bollu, MD, while some people respond well to 3 milligrams daily, others may need more or less. If you need more than 5 milligrams, you should talk to your healthcare provider first before trying a higher dose. Its use in the treatment of some types of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chicagoheadacheclinic.com\/headaches-and-melatonin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anxiety is still being studied, but many people find that taking melatonin at different doses helps them with these other health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sleep:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While there is no official melatonin dosage recommendation for sleep, taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/melatonin\/melatonin-dosage-how-much-should-you-take\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-5 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (although some adults will need to take up to 10 mg) 30 minutes before going to bed appears to be safe in most adults.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adjusting circadian rhythm:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Melatonin may be useful for people whose schedule doesn\u2019t align with their body\u2019s natural <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/melatonin-how-much-should-i-take-for-a-good-nights-rest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circadian rhythm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014for example, night shift workers who go to bed very late or those who go to bed very early. Those who live with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.0602425103\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal affective disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAD, also called winter depression), which is related to an altered circadian rhythm caused by shorter days, may benefit from taking melatonin in the afternoon. In either scenario, it\u2019s a good idea to work with a sleep specialist to determine dosage and duration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jet lag:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you travel often\u2014especially to new time zones\u2014even minimal doses of melatonin may be helpful in minimizing the effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/jet-lag\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20374031\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jet lag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Try taking 0.5 mg to 5 mg 30 to 60 minutes before going to sleep until you adapt to the time zone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Delayed sleep-wake phase disorder:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Melatonin is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590142720300112\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-line treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in individuals with this circadian rhythm sleep-wake cycle disorder. However, it\u2019s best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine a dose that\u2019s appropriate for you. Research indicates that a very low dose is usually effective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Premedication for surgery:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8092422\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, melatonin may be helpful in reducing anxiety before surgery, but its effectiveness in reducing anxiety after surgery has not been established.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tardive dyskinesia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Melatonin may be helpful in controlling tardive dyskinesia, a condition marked by repetitive, uncontrollable movements that are common in individuals taking antipsychotic medication. A small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21950196\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that 20 mg of melatonin decreased symptoms, but more research is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>COVID-19: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34460132\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among patients hospitalized with COVID-19, melatonin administration improved sleep quality and blood oxygen saturation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cancer, adjunctive therapy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cancer patients, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/natural\/940.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin given in high doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (orally or intravenously) may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8123278\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the size of a cancerous tumor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improve a cancer patient\u2019s survival rate, but this depends on the extent and type of cancer. Ask your healthcare provider for guidance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chemo-related thrombocytopenia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Low platelet levels in the blood caused by chemotherapy may be remediated by melatonin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ashpublications.org\/blood\/article\/112\/11\/1241\/59268\/The-Effect-and-Underlying-Mechanism-of-Melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> melatonin may enhance platelet and white blood cell recovery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Headache prevention: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5012937\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of randomized, placebo-controlled trials showed that a 10 mg dose of melatonin taken at night helped prevent cluster headaches. In comparison, a 3 mg dose was effective at preventing migraine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nicotine withdrawal: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780128153734000228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a clinically verified symptom of nicotine withdrawal. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spandidos-publications.com\/10.3892\/ijmm.2024.5406\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 research review and meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while older research indicated that taking lower-dose melatonin was effective at reducing mood-based withdrawal symptoms, more current research is needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are initial studies looking at melatonin as a therapy for certain headache disorders and anxiety, especially in relation to surgical procedures,\u201d says Dr. Kohli. However, she emphasizes that there is currently no consensus on using it for these issues, and studies about its effectiveness are ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-you-overdose-on-melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you overdose on melatonin?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to assess just how much melatonin is too much. Melatonin overdose appears to carry a low risk; the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/2011-dec\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Poison Control website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that side effects like sleepiness, headache, nausea, or agitation may occur. They reported three cases where children and adults consumed extremely high doses of melatonin and had little or no unwanted side effects (other than acute drowsiness and increased pulse).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-melatonin-safe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is melatonin safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even staying within the recommended range of melatonin could lead to long-term side effects or changes to your circadian rhythm. In other words, it might be healthier to consider melatonin as a short-term solution to your sleep troubles, used only occasionally (or nightly for a short period) rather than as a permanent Band-Aid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is always safest to allow your body to fall asleep naturally,\u201d Dr. Kohli says. \u201cTalk to your physician if you are having chronic trouble falling or staying asleep&#8230;insomnia is a very complex problem and can sometimes indicate underlying medical issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"is-it-safe-to-take-melatonin-every-night\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take melatonin every night?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there\u2019s no straight answer here, which you\u2019re probably hoping for. There isn\u2019t any evidence proving that long-term use of melatonin is safe. Though the supplement is generally not associated with dependency, habituation, or hangover symptoms, Dr. Kohli says she doesn\u2019t suggest taking melatonin every night because of the lack of long-term clinical trials evaluating the safety of chronic use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, there isn\u2019t any evidence proving nightly melatonin use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> safe.
