Because bacteria cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z-Pak<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent bacteria from growing and can decrease the spread of the infection to other people. Treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent it from evolving into a more severe illness like rheumatic fever, a condition that can damage the heart valves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-a-z-pak-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does a Z-Pak work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zithromax Z-Pak (azithromycin) is in a class of antibiotics referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">macrolide antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This class of drugs also includes erythromycin and clarithromycin. Macrolides work by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/azithromycin-oral-route\/description\/drg-20072362\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing bacteria or preventing their growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are considered to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK551495\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Azithromycin is commonly prescribed as an alternative to penicillin for people who need antibiotics but have penicillin allergies. Azithromycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/antibiotic-use\/hcp\/data-research\/antibiotic-prescribing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top prescribed antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"z-pak-azithromycin-instructions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z-Pak (azithromycin) instructions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to take this medication as directed by your healthcare provider. The typical Z-Pak dosage is two pills on the first day, then one pill per day for the next four days. However, other doses of azithromycin may be prescribed, depending on the type of infection being treated. For the best results, take this antibiotic at approximately the same time every day and continue to take it until you finish the full prescribed amount, even if you are feeling better. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/finish-antibiotics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t finish your course of antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bacteria may grow, and your infection may return. Stopping antibiotics early can also lead to antibiotic resistance, meaning the antibiotic may not work the next time you need it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z-Pak<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose, take it as soon as you can. If it&#8217;s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose\u2014it&#8217;s not recommended that you take two doses at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take your Z-Pak doses with or without food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"z-pak-azithromycin-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z-Pak (azithromycin)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Z-Pak consists of six, 250 mg tablets of azithromycin and is a five-day treatment.
