It\u2019s a simple term, but what it means and why it\u2019s necessary is causing some confusion. It may seem drastic, but experts agree that social distancing plus precautions like handwashing and wearing a mask in public are the best ways to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/world\/corona-simulator\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flatten the curve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and have the best outcome possible for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does it mean to \u201cflatten the curve\u201d?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe \u2018curve\u2019 refers to the number of people who will contract COVID-19 over a period of time,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/drsomamandal.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, of Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.\u00a0&#8220;\u2019Flattening the curve\u2019 refers to all the measures that are being taken right now to reduce the number of cases. The efforts to \u2018flatten the curve\u2019 are to avoid overtaxing our health care capacity [in terms of] number of hospital beds, emergency room availability, available doctors and nurses to take care of patients, and availability of adequate equipment to treat patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/shuhanhemd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shuhan He<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, is on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic as an emergency medicine physician at Mass General Hospital in Boston. He likens flattening the curve to the toilet paper rush (and subsequent shortage).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen everyone tries to buy toilet paper at once, there is no toilet paper left,\u201d he says. \u201cThat is a peak in the curve. But when everyone buys it at a slow, regular pace, there is always enough to go around. That is a peak that has been flattened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, as coronavirus transmission slows, the number of people infected at one time decreases, and makes it possible for everyone to receive better care. This includes other medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and anything else that might require hospitalization and the resources that come with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/preparing-for-coronavirus\/\"><b>The do\u2019s and don\u2019ts of preparing for coronavirus<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the differences between social distancing, self-isolation\/quarantine, full isolation, and lockdown?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctorlingo.com\/covid-19-terminology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terminology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not exclusive to the COVID-19 pandemic, these words come up more frequently as mandates and recommendations for flattening the curve emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mandal outlines the different definitions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Social distancing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Avoidance of public gatherings and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Self-isolation\/quarantine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Separating a person or group of people who have been exposed to a communicable disease but are not yet symptomatic. This is done to prevent the spread of a communicable disease.\u00a0In terms of coronavirus isolation precautions, the quarantine period is currently 14 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Full Isolation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Separation of a person or group of people who are reasonably believed to be infected with a communicable disease and potentially able to spread that disease to others. Isolation can be voluntary, or can be mandated by the federal, state, or local public health board.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lockdown:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In this current health crisis, lockdown refers to preventing people from leaving a certain area. This can be mandated at the federal (national lockdown), state, or local level. Depending on the level of the lockdown, all services except essential services are shut down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is social distancing a recommendation or a requirement?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it is a requirement or a recommendation depends on the state, city, or even country. Some cities have shut down bars, restaurants, night clubs, and other places people gather socially. Many areas have closed schools to slow the spread among children, who often have milder symptoms but can still infect other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In places where social distancing isn\u2019t mandated yet, it is strongly urged. \u201cIf more people do not practice social distancing, then we may be forced into a lockdown, at which point it would be mandatory,\u201d says Dr. Mandal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social distancing works when the vast majority of people are practicing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Do I need to practice social distancing even if I don\u2019t have symptoms and don\u2019t think I have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes! People with COVID-19 can be contagious before they show coronavirus symptoms. That means that you may have come into contact with somehow who is spreading COVID-19 and doesn\u2019t show it, or you could be infected yourself and not know it. Some people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshub.co.nz\/home\/world\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-new-graph-shows-people-in-their-20s-are-more-asymptomatic-and-not-being-tested-for-covid-19.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly younger adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are never symptomatic but can still spread the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social distancing also keeps healthy people healthy. You may not have come in contact with the virus yet, but staying home lessens the chances that you will and helps prevent spreading it to others if you do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the guidelines for social distancing?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re social distancing, you should not:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savvymom.ca\/article\/social-distancing-heres-what-you-should-and-shouldnt-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socialize in person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with people outside of your household.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have physical contact with anyone outside your household, including handshakes, hugs, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make outings that aren\u2019t essential. The only places you should go are grocery stores (only as needed, try to consolidate trips), essential medical appointments, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pharmacy-delivery-during-coronavirus-outbreak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to pick up medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and to work (only if necessary\u2014working from home or taking a leave are preferable). If you don\u2019t absolutely have to go out, don\u2019t!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go without a mask. When you do go out and will be in contact with other people, you should wear a cloth face covering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have play dates inside your home or other peoples\u2019 homes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have friends and family over to your house or visit their houses. This is especially important when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-prevention-older-adults\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seniors or other vulnerable people.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend events\u2014concerts, plays, or any other event, big or small.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend celebrations\u2014birthday parties, weddings, or anywhere there will be a gathering.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend religious services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend time in large or small groups of people. If you must be in a group, make it less than 10 people, and all members must maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet from everyone else and wear masks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit public spaces\u2014the gym, libraries, sporting events (adult and children), malls, museums, theme parks, resorts, anywhere else people gather and objects are shared\/touched by multiple people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to play areas\u2014this includes indoor playgrounds and outdoor play equipment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take public transit if it is possible to avoid it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participate in community classes such as those offered through recreation centers or private lessons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel. Essential trips only, postpone vacations and any other non-essential travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat out. Take-out, drive-thru, and delivery are debatable. While preferable to dining in a restaurant, there is still contact between your food, drink, and other people. At this time, it may be best to cook for yourself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t absolutely have to leave the house, don\u2019t. And don\u2019t let anyone into your house unless it is essential either. It sounds extreme, but it\u2019s much better to use social distancing now to slow the spread of the virus, than to do it as a reaction to widespread infection. The more people who practice social distancing, the better it will work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with these restrictions, there are still a lot of things you can do while practicing social distancing. If you can do it in your house without contact with other people, go for it, have fun!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/healthy-social-distancing-during-covid-19\/\"><b>How to stay healthy during social distancing<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What should you do if someone in your house is infected with or has been exposed to COVID-19?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before anyone gets sick or is exposed, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prepare\/get-your-household-ready-for-COVID-19.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make a plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If someone is already sick or has been exposed to COVID-19, taking care of them at home <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/guidance-prevent-spread.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires special considerations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infected, or potentially infected, person should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay home except for receiving medical care. (Call ahead before going to the doctor.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isolate themselves inside the house, in a designated room away from other people and animals. If possible, they should use a separate, designated bathroom as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear a face mask when around other people and animals, such as in the room or sharing a vehicle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneeze into a tissue, discard the tissue in a lined trash can, and then immediately wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or use a 60% alcohol or higher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/does-hand-sanitizer-expire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hand sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if handwashing is not possible.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone in the house should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash their hands frequently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid sharing personal items such as utensils, towels, drinking glasses, bedding, etc. These items should be washed after use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean all \u201chigh touch surfaces\u201d daily. These include but are not limited to doorknobs, countertops, toilets, faucet taps, phones, and other devices, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor their symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (particularly look for fever, cough, or shortness of breath.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-isolation-mental-health\/\">Protecting your mental health while self-isolating for COVID-19<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By being vigilant about practicing social distancing, it will help make sure that hospitals are able to care for both COVID-19 patients and anyone else needing emergency or intensive care services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social distancing is crucial right now. It won\u2019t be forever. The more distance you put between yourself and others, the less dire of an impact COVID-19 will have.
