What is Spironolactone-HCTZ?

Spironolactone-HCTZ is a blood pressure and edema combination drug that reduces water in the body. Spironolactone-HCTZ is prescribed to patients with high blood pressure or edema (excess water collecting in the body's tissues) due to liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure, or who have not responded to other diuretics.

Both active ingredients are “water pills,” or diuretics, that flush water and salts from the body.

Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a class of diuretics called thiazides, which work by reducing the kidney's ability to reabsorb water or salt from the urine. Thiazide diuretics are a very common and safe diuretic and often the first prescribed to patients.

Spironolactone belongs to a class of diuretics called potassium-sparing diuretics.
