Ancobon is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Bausch Health Companies Inc. The generic version of this drug is flucytosine.
This medication is used to treat serious fungal infections in the body. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antifungals. Ancobon is usually used along with other medications such as amphotericin B. The active ingredient in this medication is flucytosine. It works by slowing the growth of certain types of bacteria.
This FDA-approved drug is available in the form of an oral capsule and is usually taken four times a day, once every six hours, or as directed by your doctor. To reduce an upset stomach, do not swallow all of the capsules for one dose at the same time. It may be best to swallow the capsules for each dose over a 15-minute period until the full dose is taken. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
Continue using this medication until your prescription is complete, even if you no longer experience the symptoms of your condition. Fungal infections may still linger and can return if you stop using this medication before the period advised to you by your doctor.
Common side effects that may result from the use of Ancobon include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Notify your doctor right away if these effects persist or worsen. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, it means that they have judged the benefits to you as being greater than the risk of side effects. Most patients using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
Inform your doctor immediately if you begin to experience serious side effects such as dark urine, yellowing eyes or skin, tiredness, fast breathing, pale skin, fast heartbeat, coughing, persistent sore throat, signs of easy bleeding or bruising, bloody or black tools, and vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
