Auvelity is used to treat depression in adults. Auvelity contains two active ingredients, dextromethorphan and bupropion. The exact way dextromethorphan works to treat depression is not fully understood. Bupropion, an antidepressant, may help by affecting brain chemicals like norepinephrine and dopamine.
Auvelity is an oral tablet that is taken by mouth with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole. You should not chew, crush, or split the tablet. Your healthcare provider will tell you how to take this medicine. Generally, it is prescribed to be taken once a day for 3 days, then twice a day after that.
Try to limit or avoid alcohol while using Auvelity. If you drink heavily, consult your healthcare provider before stopping alcohol suddenly, as this could increase your risk of seizures. Also, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you see how Auvelity affects you, as it may impair your ability to do these safely.
Before taking Auvelity, tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have, including if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Auvelity is not recommended for use when pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and dietary supplements. Auvelity can interact with many medications, so your healthcare provider will need to check for drug interactions.
Auvelity is not safe for everyone. You should not use Auvelity if:
You are allergic to any ingredient in the medication
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
You have a history of seizure disorders
You have or have ever had bulimia or anorexia nervosa
You suddenly stop drinking alcohol
You suddenly stop taking benzodiazepines (anxiety medicines), barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs
You are currently taking or have stopped taking an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days
If you are getting a urine drug test, let the lab staff member know you take Auvelity. This is important because Auvelity may cause the test to show a positive result for amphetamines, and the lab can administer a more specific test to clarify the results.
The most common side effects of Auvelity include dizziness, headache, diarrhea, sleepiness, dry mouth, excess sweating, and sexual function problems.
Auvelity has a black box warning, the most serious warning required by the FDA. The warning states that antidepressants may cause suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults. People of any age who take an antidepressant such as Auvelity should be closely monitored for changes in mood and behavior, unusual thoughts, or suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
Other serious side effects may occur, including, but are not limited to, seizures, high blood pressure, psychiatric and other mental health reactions, serotonin syndrome, a type of eye problem called angle-closure glaucoma, and dizziness (which can increase the risk of falls). Discuss these potentially serious side effects with your healthcare provider and find out what symptoms you should watch for.
Serious allergic reactions are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help immediately.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information about the side effects of Auvelity and what to do if you experience them.
In clinical studies, about 4% of people taking Auvelity reported a decrease in appetite. While weight loss is commonly associated with bupropion, one of the two active ingredients in Auvelity (also found in single-ingredient antidepressant medicines like Wellbutrin XL), clinical studies have not shown significant weight loss with Auvelity. In a 6-week study, people taking Auvelity lost an average of approximately half a pound.
Wellbutrin is a medication that contains the active ingredient bupropion. It comes in several forms, including immediate-release and extended-release versions, and is commonly used to treat depression and prevent seasonal affective disorder.
Auvelity also contains bupropion, but it is a combination medication. In addition to bupropion, Auvelity includes another active ingredient called dextromethorphan. While both Wellbutrin and Auvelity use bupropion to work on brain chemicals, Auvelity also contains dextromethorphan, which works in a different way. Consult your healthcare professional for medical advice and more information about the best treatment for your condition.
