This FDA-approved medication is available in the form of a syringe or autoinjector pen for injection. Avonex is injected directly into a muscle as directed by your doctor, usually once a week. The dosage of this medication may be started at a low dose and gradually increased in order to reduce the incidence of flu-like side effects. Before injecting each dose, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol. Change the injection site each time to lessen the risk of injury. Do not inject this medication into skin that is red, scarred, sore, or infected. If you are using a prefilled syringe, inject this medication into the thigh or upper arm.
Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Your doctor may instruct you to start this medication at a low dose to reduce the risk of side effects. Your dose may then be gradually increased over time. Follow your doctor's instructions closely. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Try taking it on the same day each week.
This medication may cause pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Avonex may also cause flu-like symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, fever, chills, and muscle aches upon first starting treatment with this medication. These effects usually last about one day after the injection and often go away over a few months of continued use. You can avoid these side effects by using this medication at bedtime.
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects such as mood changes, thoughts of suicide, depression, easier bleeding or bruising than normal, joint pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, new or worsening symptoms of heart failure, unusual tiredness, or sudden weight gain.
