Is there a generic of Biothrax?

Biothrax is a brand-name anthrax vaccine developed by the United States government. The generic name is Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed, or AVA. Biothrax is the only FDA-approved anthrax vaccine in the United States. There are no generic versions or alternative brand-name versions of AVA at this time.

What is Biothrax?

Biothrax is the only FDA-approved vaccine that provides active immunity from anthrax, a bacterial infection of sheep and cattle. When the anthrax bacteria cross over into humans, it can cause severe and often fatal infections of the skin and lungs. Biothrax was originally developed by the United States government to protect against anthrax used as a biological weapon.

The active ingredients are proteins and cellular contents from Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria that cause anthrax. Such vaccines are called acellular vaccines because they do not contain dead or weakened organisms as many other vaccines do. The active ingredients in Biothrax stimulate the production of antibodies against the bacteria, allowing the body able to defend against later infections when they first occur.

Biothrax is used to prevent anthrax infection either before or after exposure to the bacteria that causes anthrax. For people at risk of anthrax exposure, Biothrax is given in a primary series of injections at 0,1, and 6 months and a secondary series six and twelve months later. Booster shots continue every 12 months or until the risk of exposure has passed. For people exposed to anthrax, Biothrax is injected in a single series at 0, 2, and 4 weeks along with an active regimen of antibiotics.

What are the side effects of Biothrax?

Although not a complete list, common side effects of Biothrax include, but are not limited to, muscle pain, tired feeling, headache, and trouble moving the arm in which Biothrax has been injected. Site reactions to the injection are common and include redness, pain, swelling, and a hard lump at the needle site. Injection site reactions will go away after one or two days. Allergic reactions are very rare and include rash, itching, and swelling at the injection site. Biothrax boosters will not be administered if there is an allergic reaction to any of the injections in the series.
