Caplyta is part of a class of drugs known as second-generation antipsychotic drugs or atypical antipsychotics. It is used to treat schizophrenia in adults. It can also be used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder, also known as bipolar depression, in adults. For bipolar depression, Caplyta can be used alone or in combination with other medication such as lithium or divalproex.
Caplyta is made by the pharmaceutical company Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc. Caplyta is available as a capsule that is taken by mouth and is available in 10.5 mg, 21 mg, and 42 mg doses. It is typically prescribed to be taken once a day and can be taken with or without food.
Caplyta is approved for use in adults only. Before taking Caplyta, tell your healthcare professional about all of your medical conditions, including pregnancy or breastfeeding. Caplyta use during the third trimester of pregnancy may cause withdrawal symptoms in the newborn baby, such as agitation, muscle stiffness, tremors, drowsiness, breathing problems, and feeding issues. Caplyta may also affect fertility in both males and females, so discuss any concerns about fertility with your healthcare provider.
Caplyta can cause problems with body temperature regulation, making you feel very warm and leading to overheating. To avoid overheating while taking Caplyta, stay in cool environments and wear light clothing. It's also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as this helps manage overall body temperature.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Caplyta affects you, as it may cause drowsiness.
Tell your healthcare professional about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. You should avoid grapefruit juice and grapefruit while taking this medicine, as grapefruit can interact with Caplyta.
The most common side effects of Caplyta are nausea, dry mouth, sleepiness, and dizziness.
This medicine has a black box warning, the most serious warning required by the FDA. This warning states:
Caplyta should not be used in patients with dementia-related psychosis, as it can cause an increased risk of death in older adults with this condition.
Medications that treat depression can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in pediatric and young adult patients. Patients of any age who take Caplyta should be closely monitored for changes in mood and behavior, as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help immediately.
Other serious side effects may include, but are not limited to:
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a serious condition that can cause death. Symptoms may include high fever, confusion, stiff muscles, sweating, and changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. NMS requires emergency medical help.
Uncontrolled body movement problems (tardive dyskinesia), which may occur in the face, tongue, or other parts of the body
Metabolic problems including weight gain, high cholesterol, or high blood sugar and diabetes
Low white blood cell counts
Orthostatic hypotension, which is a drop in blood pressure when standing up. This can also lead to falls and fractures.
Seizures
Excess sleepiness
Difficulty thinking and performing normal activities
Problems regulating your body temperature
Swallowing problems, which can cause food or liquid to get into the lungs
All antipsychotics, including Caplyta, can lead to weight gain. The extent of weight gain varies among different antipsychotics. Caplyta is generally considered to have a lower risk of weight gain compared to some other antipsychotics. Your doctor will monitor your weight before starting Caplyta and will continue to check it regularly during your treatment.
Abilify (aripiprazole) is an atypical antipsychotic similar to Caplyta. In addition to treating schizophrenia, Abilify is FDA-approved for managing manic and mixed episodes related to bipolar I disorder. It is also used to treat Tourette syndrome and irritability associated with autism. Abilify can also be combined with other medications to treat depression. While both Caplyta and Abilify are effective for treating schizophrenia, Caplyta may have fewer side effects for some individuals. However, individual responses can vary, so it is important to consult your healthcare provider for more information and medical advice.
