Comirnaty is a branded prescription manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech. There is no generic version of Comirnaty available at this time.
Comirnaty is a vaccine used for COVID-19 prevention, but like all vaccines, it may not provide protection for everyone who receives it. Comirnaty, made by Pfizer and BioNTech, was the first COVID vaccine to receive FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in December of 2020.
Comirnaty is a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine and is given by intramuscular injection. Its FDA-licensed indication is to prevent COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This FDA approval applies to adults and pediatric patients 12 years and older. While Comirnaty is FDA-approved for those 12 years and older, Pfizer-BioNTech also provides COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months.
Comirnaty works by entering cells and helping them make the COVID-19 spike protein. This triggers the immune system to produce antibodies against COVID-19, which helps protect you from the virus. This vaccine does not contain live virus and it cannot give you a COVID-19 infection.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older should receive the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine. The only exceptions are people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine, or who are allergic to any ingredient in the vaccine.
People who have received a COVID-19 vaccine before, or who have had COVID-19 infection, should still receive this vaccine.
The vaccine is recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have any questions or concerns, consult your healthcare provider. You can also check the CDC website for more information about the COVID-19 Pregnancy Exposure Registry, which collects data on the vaccine’s effects on pregnant women and their babies.
Before you get the Comirnaty vaccine, tell your healthcare provider if and when you received previous COVID-19 vaccines. Also, tell them about any medical conditions you have, especially if you:
Have any allergies or a history of an allergic reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine
Have a history of fainting from a COVID-19 vaccine
Have heart problems
Have a bleeding condition or take a blood thinner
Have a fever
Are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
Have a compromised immune system or take medicine that affects your immune system
Common side effects of Comirnaty include:
Injection site pain, redness, and/or swelling
Tiredness
Headache
Fever
Chills
Muscle pain
Joint pain
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Feeling unwell
Swollen lymph nodes
Loss of appetite
Dizziness
Serious side effects are not common, and may include:
Heart inflammation, including myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the lining outside the heart). Get medical help right away if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or if you feel like your heart is pounding, fluttering, or beating fast. Heart inflammation is rare, but if it occurs, it is more likely to occur within two weeks of receiving the vaccine.
Serious allergic reactions are rare but may occur within several minutes to one hour after the vaccine. Your healthcare provider may monitor you during this time. If you are not with your healthcare provider, get emergency medical help right away if you have a rash all over the body, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness.
Fainting
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of fall 2024, there are three COVID vaccines available. All of the vaccines help protect against the virus that causes COVID-19. The vaccines do not use a live virus and cannot cause a COVID-19 infection. Comirnaty, made by Pfizer and BioNTech, and Spikevax, made by Moderna, are mRNA vaccines, and work by entering cells and helping them make the COVID-19 spike protein. Then, the immune system makes antibodies to protect you against COVID-19.
The third vaccine, made by Novavax, is known as a protein subunit vaccine. The vaccine contains parts of the virus (the spike protein) that cause COVID-19, prompting the immune system to make antibodies and activate immune cells to protect against COVID-19.
The CDC currently recommends that people stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations and get whichever vaccine is available at their preferred location. The CDC does not recommend one brand over another. For more information and the latest recommendations, visit the CDC website.
