This drug can be used together with other medications when treating seizures. Depakote ER belongs to the fatty acid derivative anticonvulsant drug class and works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. If you have been diagnosed with liver disease, a urea cycle disorder, or a genetic disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome then you should not use Depakote ER. To make sure Depakote ER is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial disorder, depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts or actions, a family history of a urea cycle disorder or infant deaths with unknown cause, or HIV or CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection.If you take Depakote ER for seizures or manic episodes then it should be stopped if you become pregnant to avoid birth defects.
