Estrogel is a brand-name drug manufactured by Ascend Therapeutics, Inc. There is no generic version of Estrogel currently available on the U.S. market.

What is Estrogel?

Estrogel is a clear, colorless gel used to reduce specific symptoms of menopause. These symptoms include hot flashes, and vaginal symptoms such as dryness, burning, and irritation. Estrogel is an FDA-approved bioidentical estrogen therapy derived from a plant source. It contains an estrogen hormone called estradiol. This is absorbed through the skin and enters into the bloodstream to provide the body with needed estrogen.

When using Estrogel, do not allow the medication to come into contact with others, especially children. You should not use Estrogel if you have a history of heart attack, stroke, blood clot, a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder, breast cancer, liver disease, or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Do not use Estrogel if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Using estrogens such as Estrogel may also increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, breast cancer, or dementia. There is also an increased risk of endometrial cancer in women with a uterus. It is recommended that you talk to your healthcare provider before using Estrogel to find out if it may be right for you.

What are the side effects of Estrogel?

Common side effects of Estrogel include, but are not limited to headache, breast pain, stomach or abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, fluid retention, and vaginal yeast infection.

Other less common but serious side effects may include heart attack, stroke, blood clots, dementia, and breast cancer. Contact your doctor immediately for medical advice if you think you may have one or more of these side effects.

You should also let your doctor know if you are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients in Estrogel. Signs of an allergic reaction may include rash, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. Get emergency medical attention if you have an allergic reaction to Estrogel. Talk to your doctor about these and other side effects because this is not a complete list.
