Faslodex is a brand-name prescription injection with the active ingredient, fulvestrant. Generic fulvestrant is available from a few generic manufacturers, including Apotex, Glenmark, Mylan, and others.
Faslodex is a brand-name prescription injection used to treat breast cancer in menopausal women. Faslodex is effective against cancers that are “hormone receptive” (HR+), and not receptive to human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2-). In HR+ breast cancer, the female hormone can attach to the cancer cell and cause it to produce more cancer cells. In HER2- cancers, the HER2 protein does not cause the cancer cells to produce new cancer cells.
The uncontrolled growth of HR+ breast cancer is caused by the overactivity of hormone receptors on the surface of the cancer cell. These receptors are “activated” by estrogen and signal the cancer cell to produce more cancer cells. The active ingredient in Faslodex, fulvestrant, attaches to these receptors and blocks them from activating the cancer cell to grow. This slows or stops breast cancer tumors from growing.
Faslodex is administered by a healthcare professional as a slow intramuscular injection three times in the first month (days 1, 15, and 29), and once per month afterward. Faslodex is used as a single drug chemotherapy or is used with palbociclib (Ibrance).
The most frequently experienced side effects are site reactions to the injection, including muscle pain, soreness, and rash. Common side effects of Faslodex include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, back pain, bone pain, joint pain, back pain, muscle pain, arm or leg pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, feeling tired, cough, problems with breathing, problems with urination, bleeding problems, and trouble sleeping. Some patients may experience mild stomatitis, or oral ulceration and irritation, while being treated with Faslodex. Faslodex is toxic to fetuses.
Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling, itching, or rash, and consult with your healthcare provider immediately for medical advice or additional information.
