Gaviscon is an over-the-counter antacid for the relief of heartburn and acid indigestion. Gaviscon is available as chewable tablets or liquid in regular and extra-strength versions. Used as directed, Gaviscon is safe to take but may affect other medications you may be taking.

Gaviscon can be used without a prescription to treat heartburn, acid indigestion, or sour stomach.

What are common Gaviscon doses?

  • Regular strength: 2–4 chewable tablets OR 1–2 tablespoons liquid after meals or before bedtime up to four times per day

  • Extra strength: 2–4 chewable tablets OR 2–4 teaspoons liquid after meals or before bedtime up to four times per day

How to take Gaviscon

  • Follow the instructions on the medicine label if you are using this medicine without a prescription. Take doses exactly as instructed.

  • If this medicine is prescribed by a doctor, follow the doctor’s instructions.

  • Take Gaviscon after meals or before bedtime.

  • Gaviscon can be taken as soon as symptoms appear.

  • It’s usually best to stay upright for one to two hours after taking an antacid.

How to take Gaviscon chewable tablets:

  • Chew the chewable tablet before swallowing. Do not swallow, suck on, or crush the tablet. The tablets should start foaming while you chew them.

  • Drink a half glass of water or other fluid after taking the tablets

  • Do not take more than 16 tablets per day

  • Store Gaviscon chewable tablets at room temperature in a dry place

How to take Gaviscon liquid:

  • Shake the bottle well before measuring out a dose 

  • Read the instructions carefully—Gaviscon regular strength doses are measured in tablespoons, and Gaviscon extra strength doses are measured in teaspoons

  • Measure the dose with a marked measuring spoon or other measuring device

  • Store Gaviscon liquid at room temperature—do not freeze

What to do if you miss a dose of Gaviscon

  • A dose of Gaviscon can be taken whenever you experience heartburn or indigestion symptoms after a meal. 

  • Take a missed dose when remembered if you are still experiencing symptoms.

  • Do not exceed the maximum dose if a dose is missed. Do not take more than four doses per day.

Gaviscon contraindications

  • Do not take Gaviscon if you have allergies to any of the ingredients.

  • Do not take Gaviscon if you have stomach ulcers or trouble swallowing.

Gaviscon warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • Before using Gaviscon, talk to a doctor if you:

    • Have kidney disease

    • Are on a sodium-restricted diet

    • Take prescription medications

  • Stop taking Gaviscon and talk to a doctor if symptoms continue or you need to use Gaviscon for longer than 14 days.

  • Talk to a doctor before giving Gaviscon to a child.

Gaviscon interactions

  • Because antacids neutralize stomach acid, many prescription and over-the-counter oral medications don’t work as well if you take them with an antacid. If you’re taking prescription medications, talk to a doctor before starting Gaviscon.

  • Tell any other doctor you are using Gaviscon when they prescribe new medications.

  • You can take Gaviscon with most oral medications provided that you take Gaviscon at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking a dose of another medication.

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Overdose: irregular heartbeat, tiredness, weakness, confusion, trouble breathing

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

Less serious side effects

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea
