What is Hectorol used for?

Doxercalciferol is used to treat patients with kidney disease who are on dialysis. It is also used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism. These conditions are associated with higher than normal levels of parathyroid hormone in the body. Doxercalciferol is a form of vitamin D that decreases the level of (PH) and increases the level of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is indicated for use in adults and is available as a capsule.

  • You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to doxercalciferol or vitamin D, or if you have recently had high blood calcium levels.

  • Do not take calcium supplements or any other type of vitamin D without your doctor's approval.

  • Avoid antacids that contain magnesium (such as Maalox® or Mylanta®) while you are using this medicine.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking phenobarbital (Donnatal®), glutethimide (Doriden®), or digitalis drugs such as digoxin (Lanoxin®) or digitoxin (Crystodigin®).

  • Follow the diet plan your doctor gives to you.

  • Avoid antacids that contain magnesium (such as Maalox® and Mylanta®) while using this medicine.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using cholestyramine (Questran®), mineral oil, phenobarbital (Donnatal®), phenytoin (Dilantin®), glutethimide (Doriden®), or digitalis drugs such as digoxin (Lanoxin®) or digitoxin (Crystodigin®).

  • Do not use calcium supplements or any other type of vitamin D without first asking your doctor.
