Is there a generic of Novolog?

Insulin aspart is the generic name for Novolog. Generic Novolog was launched in early 2020 by Novo Nordisk. Generic drugs are typically cheaper than their brand-name counterparts.

What is Novolog?

Novolog controls high blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes. It works by replacing the insulin that the body would otherwise make. Insulin helps blood sugar get into cells so it can be used for energy. Novolog, or insulin aspart, works faster than regular insulin, but it doesn't last as long. Novolog is typically prescribed to be taken before meals. It may also be prescribed along with a medium- or long-acting insulin.

Diabetes is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, as well as strokes and heart attacks. By controlling blood sugar levels, Novolog can help prevent long-term complications of diabetes. Long-term complications include kidney, eye, nerve, heart, and sexual problems.

What doses of Novolog are available?

Novolog is available as an injectable solution that comes in a strength of 100 units/mL. Novolog is available as a 10 mL multiple-dose vial, a 3 mL injectable pen, and a 3 mL cartridge. It's usually injected under the skin (subcutaneously) five to 10 minutes before a meal. Novolog is fast-acting, so it may lead to low blood sugar if you do not eat soon after taking it.

The solution should be clear and colorless. If you see particles or discoloration, do not use Novolog. Wash your hands and clean the injection site before administering Novolog. Possible injection sites include the stomach, thighs, buttocks, or the back of the upper arm.

Rotate injection sites every time you use Novolog to reduce the risk of certain injection site reactions. If you use a second type of insulin, do not use the same injection site for both medications. Injecting cold insulin could be painful, so you may choose to store your vial of Novolog at room temperature.

Your healthcare provider may adjust your insulin dosage depending on your insulin needs and lifestyle. Always speak with your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about using Novolog.

What are the side effects of Novolog?

Injection site reactions, such as redness, irritation, or swelling around the area of injection, are common side effects of Novolog. Other side effects of Novolog may include low potassium levels (hypokalemia), weight gain, swelling of the hands and feet, and low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, sweating, confusion, headache, blurred vision, hunger, and shakiness. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as severe rash, itching, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face or throat.

Talk to a healthcare provider about other serious side effects, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Novolog. You should also tell your healthcare provider about other medical conditions you have or other medications you may be taking.

Does Novolog make you tired?

Novolog works by helping blood sugar enter cells to be used for energy. If you take too much insulin, your blood sugar levels could drop too low. Low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can lead to symptoms like feeling tired or weak. Tell your healthcare provider if you feel tired while taking Novolog, as your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Low potassium levels (hypokalemia) is another possible side effect of Novolog, which could lead you to feel weak or fatigued. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you experience weakness, unusual muscle cramps, or an irregular heartbeat while using Novolog. They may recommend an over-the-counter potassium supplement, a potassium-rich diet, or an adjustment to your dosage of Novolog.

Can insulin make you gain weight?

Many people who take insulin experience weight gain. When you start taking insulin, such as Novolog, your body will absorb blood sugar for energy and store excess blood sugar as fat. This process may cause weight gain in people taking insulin for diabetes.

Hunger is also a common symptom of low blood sugar. If you have low blood sugar, you may eat more than you need. Fortunately, insulin is often prescribed with a diet and exercise plan that you can use to make healthy lifestyle changes and manage your weight.

Can Novolog be used in an insulin pump?

Novolog can be used in an insulin pump. It may be administered this way in children above the age of two with Type 1 diabetes and adults with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

An insulin pump is a small, battery-powered device that steadily injects a measured amount of insulin under the skin. It provides storage of Novolog insulin for up to six days. Depending on your lifestyle and insulin needs, your healthcare provider may recommend an insulin pump rather than a Flexpen or a syringe.

What is a substitute for Novolog?

If you and your healthcare provider have decided that Novolog isn’t right for you, other options are available. Rapid-acting insulins that work similarly to Novolog include Humalog (insulin lispro) and Apidra (insulin glulisine). It’s important to discuss insulin treatment options with a healthcare provider. You may be recommended an intermediate- or long-acting insulin in addition to a rapid-acting insulin. Insulin treatment regimens are individualized based on your lifestyle, diet, and blood sugar levels.
