Copay costs of Periogard will be different depending on your insurance plan. With SingleCare, Periogard costs as little as $4.76 for 473, 0.12% solution (quantity in ml)s. However, sometimes Periogard is supplied by your dentist, who purchases Periogard from a specialty pharmacy. Usually, however, you will fill your dentist's or doctor's prescription at a pharmacy. Periogard is a brand-name prescription mouthwash with chlorhexidine. GUM Paroex and Peridex are competing brand-name chlorhexidine mouthwashes. Periogard is a prescription antiseptic mouthwash that treats gingivitis, a condition in which the gums become swollen, tender, and red due to a bacterial infection. The active ingredient in Periogard, chlorhexidine gluconate, is a powerful antiseptic that kills most of the bacteria that cause gingivitis.
As a mouthwash, Periogard is applied as a 30-second rinse twice per day after brushing.
Side effects of Periogard include teeth staining, an increase in tartar, changes in taste, irritation, dry mouth, and site reactions. For most patients, Periogard leaves a bad aftertaste in the mouth, sometimes for hours. Some patients have experienced swelling of the salivary glands with Periogard. Allergic reactions are rare but potentially severe and include a severe skin reaction (body-wide blistering and peeling, fever, and swelling) and anaphylaxis, a dangerous and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure.
Chlorhexidine is a poison and should not be swallowed. Always spit it out after use. If Periogard is swallowed, typical side effects include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, since chlorhexidine is not easily absorbed by the digestive system.
Consult with your physician or dentist about any adverse side effects caused by this medication.
