What is Perseris?

This medication is used to treat a mood disorder known as schizophrenia. The active ingredient in this drug is risperidone. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. This helps to decrease hallucinations, allowing you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less agitated, and take a more active role in your life.

This FDA-approved medication is available in the form of a subcutaneous powder for injection. It is given by injection under the skin of the abdomen by a healthcare professional. This medication is usually taken once a month. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, low blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, Parkinson's disease, or a history of a heart attack or stroke.

Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before each dose is injected. This injection should not be given into an area of the skin that is reddened, irritated, bruised, infected or scarred in any way. The site should be changed each time to lessen injury under the skin. Use this medication on a regular basis to get the most benefit from it.

What are the side effects of Perseris?

Common side effects include lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, muscle stiffness, constipation, tiredness, drooling, weight gain, or redness and pain at the injection site. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.

Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.

This medication may rarely make your blood sugar rise, which can cause or worsen diabetes. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst or increased urination. If you have diabetes, you may notice a change in the results of your urine or blood sugar tests.

Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for professional medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Perseris as this is not a complete list of side effects.
