Rilutek

Riluzole is an FDA-approved generic prescription drug that treats amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), a condition that affects the brain and spinal neurons that control voluntary muscles. Riluzole slows the process of neuron death by blocking the release of a chemical, glutamate, by the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Although glutamate is vitally important to passing signals between nerves, too much of it is toxic to nerve cells. The pricing for Riluzole is $1,458.31 for 60, 50mg tablets, but the price with a SingleCare Riluzole coupon is $31.50 for 60, 50mg tablets.

What is the brand name of Riluzole?

Riluzole is a generic prescription drug that slows the progress of amyotrophic lateral disease or ALS. Riluzole is the active ingredient in the brand-name medications Rilutek (tablet), Tiglutik (oral suspension), and Exservan (oral film). Generic Riluzole tablets are available from generic manufacturers such as Mylan, Sun, Glenmark, and others. Search the SingleCare website or app for these brand-name alternatives to find additional information as well as valuable savings coupons.

What is Riluzole?

Riluzole is a generic prescription drug that treats amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), a condition that kills the brain and spinal neurons that control voluntary muscles, called motor neurons. ALS nerve death is caused by glutamate, the most common substance in the brain for transmitting signals between nerve cells. Too much glutamate is toxic to nerve cells. When glutamate builds up at nerve junctions, the nerve cells kill themselves through a natural death process called apoptosis.

Riluzole slows the process of neuron death by blocking the release of glutamate by the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Riluzole does not reverse or stop ALS, but does slow down the progress of the disease. Because Riluzole does not reverse motor neuron damage that has already occurred, patients and their caregivers will not notice any effect from Riluzole.

Riluzole is taken as a tablet, oral solution, or oral film (a thin film placed under the tongue until it dissolves).

What are the side effects of Riluzole?

The most common physical side effects of Riluzole include difficulty breathing, numbness, tingling, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, runny nose, loss of appetite, fast heartbeat, chest pain, muscle stiffness, swelling, burning feeling in the mouth, and weakness. Serious side effects include high blood pressure, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts, creating a higher risk of infection. Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling, itching, rash, and shortness of breath. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

Ask your healthcare professional for additional medical advice, drug information, and drug interactions.
