What is Albuterol?

Albuterol is an FDA-approved generic medication used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators. It works by opening your airways and relaxing muscles in the breathing passages.

Albuterol comes in the form of an inhalation solution. It is usually inhaled orally around three to four times a day. Your doctor will prescribe an appropriate dose based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are taking, and your response to treatment.

Albuterol may be used for acute bronchospasms, or sudden episodes of trouble breathing. Your doctor may prescribe Albuterol as a quick-relief inhaler for sudden asthma attacks. Adults and children over 12 years of age should not use more than 32 mg of this medicine daily.
