What is Cerefolin?
Cerefolin is no longer available in pharmacies.
Cerefolin was a brand-name prescription B-vitamin supplement with riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), methylfolate (vitamin B9), and methylcobalamin (vitamin B12). It was prescribed to treat or prevent B-vitamin deficiencies due to any number of causes, such as poor nutrition, illness, or pregnancy, among others, or to treat vitamin B deficiency anemia.
The B vitamins convert proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into energy. In particular, vitamins B6, B9, and B12 are needed to produce red blood cells, which carry needed oxygen to all the cells in the body. Deficiencies in any of these three vitamins can cause anemia (low levels of red blood cells in the blood).
What are the side effects of Cerefolin?
Cerefolin side effects are rare. Uncommon side effects include but are not limited to rash, discomfort, diarrhea, and depression. All the B vitamins are natural to the body, so allergies are rare. However, because vitamin B12 has cobalt in its structure, patients with cobalt allergies should not take large amounts of the vitamin or they risk an allergic reaction. Otherwise, any allergic reaction to Cerefolin would most likely have been an allergic reaction to the inactive ingredients. As with all supplements, discontinue any use of the supplement immediately if you suspect you're having an allergic reaction.
