What is Eylea used for?

Eylea is used to treat patients with macular degeneration. Eylea stops the production of abnormal, new blood vessels in the eyes. It also prevents fluid buildup in the eye. This prevents scarring and loss of vision in patients with this condition. Eylea is indicated for use in adults and is available as an injection.

What to do if you miss a dose of Eylea

Eylea contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to aflibercept, or if you are pregnant, or have an eye infection or active eye swelling.

Eylea warnings

  • This medicine may cause the following problems: Eye problems, including a detached retina, eye swelling, increased pressure inside your eyeIncreased risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke

  • Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, or if you have other eye problems or a history of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke.

  • It is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control before and during treatment with this medicine and for 3 months after the last dose.

  • Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.

  • This medicine may cause temporary blurred vision. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

Eylea interactions

  • Women should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for 3 months after the last dose. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have become pregnant while you are receiving this medicine.

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have other eye problems or a history of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke.

Serious Side Effects

  • Eye pain or redness, trouble seeing, sensitivity to light, eyelid swelling, blurred vision

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood

  • Pain in your lower leg (calf)

  • Bleeding in your eye

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body, sudden or severe headache, problems with vision, speech, or walking

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Floaters (seeing dark spots or lines in your field of vision), increased tearing

  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or redness where the shot is given
