There is no specific generic version of Cyanocobalamin, but it is available in a variety of brand-name and generic B12 supplements. It is also a very common nutrient in brand-name and generic multivitamins.
Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12 (cobalamin). Vitamin B12 is not produced by the body but is found in many animal products (like meat, dairy, and eggs) or dietary supplements. As a supplement, Cyanocobalamin is usually taken in the form of a tablet, sublingual tablet, injection, or oral liquid.
Vitamin B12 is vital for the growth and reproduction of the body's cells, especially red blood cells. A vitamin B12 deficiency can result in a condition known as pernicious anemia, a decrease in the body's red blood cells. Patients with pernicious anemia are treated by vitamin B12 supplements either in the form of hydroxocobalamin or Cyanocobalamin.
Cyanocobalamin may also be prescribed for patients with conditions such as bowel cancer, tapeworm, or following certain types of stomach surgery, all of which put patients at risk for pernicious anemia.
Cyanocobalamin is available in many over-the-counter vitamin supplements both individually and in combination with other nutrients. However, when prescribed for pernicious anemia, patients will have to take Cyanocobalamin in doses hundreds or thousands of times greater than the recommended daily allowance.
Common side effects may include headache, nasuea, diarrhea, incoordination, anxiety, nervousness, itching, and swelling. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. If you have any reaction to Cyanocobalamin or any other vitamin B12 supplements, consult with your physician.
While taking Cyanocobalamin, avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on alcohol consumption that is safe for you.
Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Take the dose recommended or prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Some studies have found that the body absorbs Cyanocobalamin slightly better than other forms of B12, like methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is used to treat vitamin B12 deficiencies due to malabsorption which may be associated with various conditions, such as pernicious anemia, folic acid deficiency, malignancy, or certain gastrointestinal conditions.
