The brand-name prescription drug Linzess relieves chronic forms of constipation in both adults and children aged 6 and older. It contains linaclotide, a drug that both increases water content in the large intestine and helps relieve abdominal pain. Linzess is taken once daily. The most common side effect is diarrhea.

Linzess is a medication approved to treat chronic forms of constipation. In adults, Linzess treats irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, a condition that leads to stomach pain and constipation that can be difficult to manage. It also treats chronic idiopathic constipation, which is long-lasting constipation with no clear cause. In children aged 6 to 17 years old, Linzess may be prescribed to treat functional constipation, which occurs when a child has trouble having regular bowel movements or passing stools without any underlying cause.
Take Linzess on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before your first meal at the same time each day, for maximum absorption and effectiveness.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as Linzess can cause diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration if fluids are not replenished.
Be patient, as it may take up to a week or two for Linzess to start working effectively. Don't discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor first.
If you experience severe or persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these may indicate a more serious underlying condition.
If you have trouble swallowing the Linzess capsule whole, you can open it and mix the contents with applesauce or water to take orally. Alternatively, the contents can be mixed with water and given through a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube.
