Synjardy XR is an FDA-approved combination of two drugs: metformin and empagliflozin. This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Maintaining proper control over blood sugar helps to prevent a number of health complications such as blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. It may also lessen the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Synjardy XR helps to improve the hemoglobin A1C, which is a measure of control of blood glucose levels over the past three months.
Synjardy XR works by helping to restore the body's response to insulin. It also increases the amount of sugar that is removed by the kidneys and decreases the amount of sugar that is produced in the liver.
Synjardy is an immediate-release tablet and contains the same ingredients as Synjardy XR. Synjardy XR is an extended-release tablet. Synjardy is dosed twice daily, and Synjardy XR is dosed once daily. Both medications are prescription drugs that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Common possible side effects may include vomiting, upset stomach, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, vitamin B12 deficiency, and urinary tract infections (in some cases, serious urinary tract infections). Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include an urgency to urinate, urinating more frequently, a burning feeling when you urinate, or blood in the urine. Genital fungal infections (such as vaginal yeast infections) can also occur. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.
If you continue to experience intestinal problems (stomach issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea) and/or have tiredness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or feel unwell, then you should get emergency medical help right away by going to the nearest hospital emergency room. This may be a sign of lactic acidosis, which is a medical emergency. Lactic acidosis is life-threatening and can cause serious complications and/or death. Certain people have a higher chance of developing lactic acidosis. These risk factors include those with congestive heart failure or kidney problems, or patients who have a heart attack.
{{drug} can induce ovulation, and can result in an unintended pregnancy. If you do not wish to get pregnant, talk to your health care provider about effective birth control methods.
While taking Synjardy XR, stand up slowly, because Synjardy XR may cause you to feel dizzy.
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, shortness of breath, or facial swelling, get emergency medical attention.
Other adverse effects not listed here may also occur as this is not a complete list. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your healthcare provider for medical advice on all the risks and benefits involved with using Synjardy XR.
Follow your healthcare provider’s advice on a healthy diet and exercise. You may want to consult a registered dietician for dietary advice, for example, following a low-salt diet.
Be sure to tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking before you start treatment with Synjardy XR. This includes prescription medicines and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Alcohol can interact with this medication. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Synjardy XR if you drink alcohol.
Individuals who take a diuretic, such as hydrochlorothiazide or Lasix (furosemide) are at higher risk for dehydration when taking Synjardy XR. In these patients, kidney function and volume status will be closely monitored.
This medication generally does not cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), but hypoglycemia may occur if you are using this drug with certain other diabetic medications. This includes insulin or certain diabetes medicines such as Amaryl (glimepiride), glipizide, or glyburide.
On the other hand, certain drugs tend to increase blood sugar and may require dosage adjustments and/or close monitoring. Examples include diuretics, steroids such as prednisone, thyroid medications, oral hormonal birth control, Dilantin (phenytoin), and calcium channel blockers.
This is not a full list of drug interactions and others may occur. Consult your physician for more information regarding drug interactions.
This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet that is usually used once daily in the morning with a meal. These tablets are meant to be swallowed whole and should not be dissolved, crushed, or chewed. Doing so may cause all of the medication to be released at once and increase the risk of side effects.
Your healthcare professional will usually decide on your Synjardy XR dose based on an assessment of your medical condition, other medications you may be using, and your body's response to the treatment. To reduce the risk of side effects, your healthcare provider may start you on a small dose and gradually increase it over time, if needed.
In the event of a missed dose of Synjardy XR, take it as soon as you remember. But, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the normal time. Do not take two doses at once to try to make up for a missed dose. You can just wait until the next time you are supposed to take Synjardy XR.
Synjardy XR should be stored at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep Synjardy XR out of reach and out of sight of children and pets. Consult your healthcare provider with any questions or concerns about how to take Synjardy XR.

People with hypoxemia (low level of oxygen in the blood)

Talk to your healthcare provider about how and when to check your blood sugar, and what to do in the event of low blood sugar. Ask if you should carry emergency glucagon, which can be used in a low blood sugar emergency. Your pharmacist can show you how to use it, and you can teach your family, friends, and/or caregivers how to administer it to you if there is a low blood sugar emergency where you cannot talk or eat. You should also wear a medical identification that lets emergency responders know that you have Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
If at any time you are sick with vomiting and/or diarrhea, notify your healthcare provider, because this might affect your blood sugar. Also, let your provider know any time you are scheduled for surgery.
