Zyclara, generically named imiquimod, is a brand prescription drug approved by the FDA for the treatment (not cure) of external genital and anal warts. This cream can also be recommended for the treatment of actinic keratosis. Actinic keratosis is a precancerous disease caused by sun exposure. Zyclara is classified as an immune response modifier that activates the body's immune system to abnormal skin growths. This medication is recommended for use by persons over the age of 12 for genital warts and persons over the age of 18 for actinic keratosis.
Always remember to read the instruction leaflet and to consult your healthcare professional concerning the correct dosage and frequency for your medical condition. Zyclara is a topical only medication that is recommended to be applied thinly once daily, completely rubbed in, and left on for 8 hours. The area should be thoroughly cleaned before and after use. Cotton underwear should be worn and do not bandage the area that Zyclara is applied. Increasing dosage or frequency does not enhance results and may lead to severe skin reactions.
It is important to remember to consult your doctor on what medications and foods should be taken when using Zyclara in order to avoid side effects. Some-but not all- side effects include redness, swelling, itching, burning, and leaking a clear fluid. Consult your doctor on how to treat side effects as well as if side effects persist or get worse.
Severe allergic reactions to Zyclara are not common. However, immediately contact your healthcare professional should you experience chest pain, swollen lymph glands, bleeding, or blisters. This is not a complete list of side effects and more are prone to occur. You can report any unlisted side effects to the FDA.
