What is Advate?

Advate is a brand-name prescription drug that provides a blood-clotting protein called factor VIII that is missing in people with hemophilia A, a condition in which the blood does not have the ability to form blood clots and stop a bleeding incident. Advate is administered as an intravenous infusion during a bleeding episode to control bleeding or before medical or dental procedures to prevent a bleeding episode.

Blood clots are complex processes in which blood platelets, small blood cells, are “glued” together to form a patch over any damage to a blood vessel. Blood clotting has several steps called the “coagulation cascade.” These are governed by proteins, called factors, which are numbered by their place in the blood clotting process. Factor VIII, called antihemophilic factor, is responsible for producing the next proteins in the process (factor IX and factor X) that eventually end up producing the fibrous “glue” that forms blood clots. Patients with hemophilia A do not produce enough factor VIII, so the coagulation cascade stops at factor VII and they are unable to form blood clots.

Advate is an intravenous injection of factor VIII proteins (antihemophilic factor) that is only used during a bleeding episode or prior to medical or dental procedures that will cause bleeding. It is meant to be administered only by a physician experienced in hemophilia A.

What are the side effects of Advate?

Nearly all patients who take Advate will experience injection site reactions, such as pain, irritation, swelling, redness, and bruising. Other common side effects of Advate include, but are not limited to, headache, fever, chills, cough, sore throat, cold symptoms, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, sweating, swelling, hot flashes, rash, and runny or stuffy nose. Serious side effects include limb injury and upper respiratory tract infections.

Allergic reactions are very rare. Advate is always administered by a healthcare professional in an environment in which the patient is heavily monitored, so allergic reactions will be immediately responded to.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with your prescribing physician and pharmacist about possible side effects before starting on Advate.
