What is Altacaine?

Altacaine is a brand-name prescription topical anesthetic used as eye drops to numb the eye before simple eye procedures such as removing foreign material from the cornea, measuring eye pressure (tonometry), measuring eye drainage (gonioscopy), suture removal, or other simple and rapidly-completed procedures. Altacaine is also sometimes used to numb the eye for cataract-removal surgery, but this will require repeated application every five to ten minutes to the surface of the eye.

The active ingredient, tetracaine (or amethocaine), belongs to a class of drugs called local anesthetics. These drugs shut down nerves and effectively “numb” the tissues.

Altacaine temporarily reduces or eliminates any feeling, including pain, from the surface of the eye.

Altacaine is applied as one or two drops to the surface of the eye. Altacaine must be reapplied every 5-10 minutes to a maximum of five doses.

What are the side effects of Altacaine?

Some but not all common side effects of Altacaine are primarily site reactions and include stinging, burning, and redness.

Allergic reactions are rare and may include a corneal reaction involving swelling of the surface of the eye or iris and the sloughing off of membrane tissue from the surface of the eye. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult with your optometrist or ophthalmologist about the side effects of Altacaine if you have any concerns or questions.
