What is Clotrimazole?
Clotrimazole topical is used to treat fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections. This drug is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis (tinea versicolor), a fungal infection that causes a lightening or darkening of the skin of the back, chest, shoulders, and stomach, which may spread to the arms, neck, and legs. Clotrimazole belongs to the azole antifungal drug class and works by preventing the growth of fungus.
Though Clotrimazole is not expected to cause harm to your unborn baby, if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Clotrimazole, you should talk to your doctor as a precaution.
To avoid creating an infection that is resistant to antifungal medicine you should use Clotrimazole for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely gone so it is important to finish the course of treatment. While using Clotrimazole you should avoid using other skin medication on the affected area (unless instructed by your doctor), and avoid wearing tight-fitting, synthetic clothing that doesn't allow air circulation. Also, avoid getting this drug into your eyes, mouth, and genital area.
Wash your hands before and after applying Clotrimazole, unless you are treating your hands. Do not cover the treated skin unless your doctor tells you to do so.
What are the side effects of Clotrimazole?
The most common side effects of Clotrimazole include erythema (redness of the skin), stinging, blistering, peeling, local edema (swelling), itching, burning, and general skin irritation. Call your doctor if these conditions worsen or persist.
In rare cases, some people may experience an allergic reaction to Clotrimazole, if you do, get immediate medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction can include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. These are not all the side effects that can occur while taking Clotrimazole. Have a conversation with your healthcare provider for medical advice about other possible side effects.
