What is Betapace?

Betapace is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat serious and life-threatening types of irregular heart rhythms called ventricular arrhythmias. It may also be used to treat irregular heart rhythms called atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. It works by slowing down electrical activity in the heart to allow the heart to beat at a normal pace. Betapace is known as both a beta-blocker and an antiarrhythmic medication.

Betapace comes in the form of an oral tablet that is taken daily. Your healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

If you are taking antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum, do not take them at the same time as Betapace. These antacids may decrease the absorption and effectiveness of Betapace. Talk to your healthcare provider about other possible drug interactions before using Betapace.

Read and follow the instructions provided in the information leaflet that comes with this drug. If you are uncertain about how to use this medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

What are the side effects of Betapace?

The use of Betapace may cause unwanted side effects, such as dizziness, tiredness, shortness of breath, or slow heartbeat. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects, or if side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects may include dangerously slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, worsening heart failure, and other heart problems like QT prolongation or AV block. Some people may experience a worsening of coronary artery disease after stopping Betapace. The use of Betapace may cause changes in electrolyte levels and blood sugar levels.

Serious allergic reactions to this medication are rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in the chest, or trouble breathing.

Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Betapace. This is not a complete list of side effects.
