Caffeine Citrate is a generic prescription drug used to treat apnea related to prematurity in newborns, a common condition in premature infants. Apnea is a condition where the newborn stops breathing for 20 seconds or more, either because they stop making an effort to breathe (central apnea) or due to an obstruction (obstructive apnea) or both. When the newborn stops breathing, typically the heart slows down and the baby's skin turns blue or gray (cyanosis).
