Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12. It’s the most common form of B12 found in over-the-counter B12 vitamins, B-complex vitamins, prenatal vitamins, multivitamins, and similar products. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient found in meats, dairy, and cheese, but is missing from vegetables and cereals unless they’re fortified. B12 is critical to the development and functioning of the nervous system, the production of red blood cells, and tissue growth. A vitamin B12 deficiency can cause serious medical issues including anemia, degeneration of the spinal cord, and birth defects.
