What is Digoxin?

Digoxin is a generic prescription medication used along with other medications to treat heart failure and certain types of irregular heartbeat, also known as chronic atrial fibrillation. Digoxin belongs to a class of medications known as cardiac glycosides. Digitek, digox, and digitalis are additional examples of cardiac glycosides. This medication works by affecting certain minerals such as sodium and potassium inside heart cells. This helps to reduce strain on the heart and helps to maintain a steady, normal heartbeat.

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet, and is usually taken once a day. Your body may not be able to absorb this drug well if you eat foods that are high in fiber. To avoid this, you may need to use this medication for at least two hours before or after meals that are high in fiber. Your healthcare professional will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, your body weight, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. While taking Digoxin, your doctor will have you check your heart rate and blood pressure every day.

This medication should be used on a regular basis to get the most benefit. Use this medication at the same time every day to help yourself remember. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor first. Some conditions may worsen if you suddenly stop taking this medication. Many drugs interact with Digoxin. Review your medication list with your doctor before taking Digoxin. Tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well as vitamins or supplements.

What are the side effects of Digoxin?

Digoxin may cause unwanted side effects such as vomiting, headaches, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, weakness, mood changes, and diarrhea. Men may experience swollen breast tissue. Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these effects.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects such as vision changes, hallucinations, or irregular heartbeat. These side effects are usually rare. Allergic reactions are rare. If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling around the face and lips, get emergency medical help right away.

Ask your doctor or healthcare professional for full medical advice on the drug interactions, risks, and benefits involved with using Digoxin as this is not a complete list of side effects.
