Doxercalciferol is a prescription drug used to treat people with serious kidney disease who have high levels of a certain natural substance called parathyroid hormone-PTH, which your body normally makes. High PTH levels affect the balance of other minerals in your body like calcium and phosphorus which can result in weak bones. This drug is synthetic and works by decreasing PTH levels and increasing calcium levels in the body.
Before using this drug, let your healthcare provider know if you have liver disease, a vitamin D deficiency, or excessive calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia). Your doctor should also be informed if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you breastfeeding while using this drug, your baby may develop hypercalcemia. Clear signs of this condition include feeding problems, vomiting, constipation, or seizures.
